At a Glance

In 2022 we celebrate a wondrous feat — the fifth centenary of the conclusion of Magellan’s and Elcano’s voyage of circumnavigation (1519 to 1522). During those three years, men of exceptional courage, endurance and skill undertook a dangerous voyage into the unknown. We will embark with their intrepid crew on an epic journey round the world in three parts. In this second session, we will follow the expeditionaries as they set sail towards the Canary Islands. After an eventful trip along the coasts of Brazil and Argentina, the ships finally found the strait that they had been looking for. Let’s try to imagine how sailors lived — how they slept, what they ate and what their concerns were — and what was their encounter with the inhabitants of those lands like. Our lecture will come to an end with the death of Magellan. Please note: The three lectures celebrating aspects of the voyage are offered separately and will require separate registration.
