Getting on/off motorcoach. Walking throughout the day at field trip locations; mostly flat, paved terrain.
In the Terrace Café and on the Lido Deck in nice weather.
Setting out by motorcoach, we'll travel to Merlion Park to see the iconic Merlion statue that blends the head of a lion with the body of a fish. The body symbolizes Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village when it was called Temasek, meaning 'sea town' in Old Javanese. Its head represents Singapore’s original name, Singapura, or ‘lion city’ in Malay. We will then drive through Chinatown. In the heart of Chinatown, where the hand of conservation has generously turned old shop house facades into the brilliance of its glorious past, we'll admire the diversity and colors, observing age-old customs and architecture typical of a bygone era. We will then transfer to Little India where we will weave our way through the colorful streets and learn about the origins of flower garlands in the Indian community. Next, we will discover the neighboring Kampong Glam, also known by the name of its main thoroughfare, Arab Street. This is where Singapore's Arab traders settled in the founding days of the colony, and was also the part of town allocated to the Malays when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, drew up his town plan. We'll drive by the street soaking in the sight of all the types of exquisite antiques and goods one can find here. We will then continue travelling through the Civic District to see the Parliament House, City Hall, Victoria Theatre, the Empress Place Building, and other colonial structures, which have been restored to their original splendor.
On your own to explore what you like.
After lunch, we will travel to Gardens by the Bay, the iconic new development and a horticultural oasis embraced within the heart of the city. The accompanying structures of the two cooled conservatories is an architectural wonder of its own; the Flower Dome replicates the dry Mediterranean climates found across the world, while the even more astounding Cloud Forest maintains a tropical montane climate, complete with a waterfall. Next, we'll marvel at the supertrees, a group of massive, solar-powered vertical gardens covered by a variety of over 162,900 plants including varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and tropical flowering climbers.
