At a Glance

Alongside your grandchild, you’ll discover that the robot is so much more than a dance move when you learn how to build one of your own, testing your engineering skills. When you’re not making new friends big and small, you’ll get a chance to practice creating problem solving skills with your grandchild as you build a robot, a Rube Goldberg machine and complete a mission-based scavenger hunt while exploring some of Chicago’s most iconic museums.

Taking public transportation throughout the program. Walking up to 2 miles a day and standing at museums and on walking explorations.

Sue Shoemaker lives on a farm in Michigan’s “thumb.” After a long career in middle level education, she prepared for a career leading groups. Her dream became a reality in 2015, and now — 26 programs later as a Group Leader and nine programs as a participant — she is an Ambassador for Road Scholar. Sue has also worked on multiple Great Lakes study cruises as well as study cruises on the Columbia River. New Mexico has been part of numerous road trips since the 1960s.

Susan Diamond is a lifelong Chicagoan, and an inspirational writer and thought leader with an international following on social media and Beliefnet.com. Susan is an active member of the esteemed Chicago Council on Global Affairs, a nonpartisan forum for world leaders, policymakers, and experts. Susan sits on the Chicago board of One Acre Fund, a leading NGO solving the problem of extreme poverty and chronic hunger through agricultural microfinance. Her background also includes expertise in running three successful businesses and lecturing on Middle East policy.

Lonnie Stoller grew up in Lincolnwood, a close suburb of Chicago, and spent many days taking the "El" downtown to explore the city with her friends. Since then, she has continued her world exploration and has traveled around the U.S., Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, and Israel. Lonnie has enjoyed a range of careers, working as a radiologic technologist, event planner, and perfume salesperson. She is delighted to share her love for Chicago with Road Scholar participants.
