Getting on/off motorcoach; driving approximately 90 miles throughout the day; about 2 hours, with stops. Walking approximately 3 miles throughout the day: walking about 1.5 miles, approximately 1.5 hours on a boardwalk; and up to 1.5 miles on uneven ground at a local farm, about 2.5 hours.
At the hotel, we will have a buffet featuring a variety of hot and cold items, plus coffee, tea, water.
Setting out from the hotel via motorcoach, we'll travel to Okeechobee, FL, where we'll board an airboat and learn from our local captain about Lake Okeechobee flora and fauna and the history of the area's inhabitants from the Native Americans to the early settlers.
Enjoy a boxed lunch along Lake Okeechobee before our visit to the MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center.
Next, we will transfer to the MacArthur Agro-ecology Research Center at Buck Island Ranch, a 10.5 thousand acre cow-calf operation with 3,000 head of cattle. There we will board an eco buggy and learn about the ranch’s mission of ecological, economic, and cultural sustainability while driving through miles of pasture, prairie, and hammock. Visitors to the ranch often see alligators, caracara, red-shouldered hawks, feral hogs, and deer.
En route to the hotel, enjoy a Southern-style plated meal in the city of Okeechobee.
