Evening: Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone with a warm welcome and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule and any changes, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have. Free time is reserved for your personal independent exploration. Please note that program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. Bike-Fitting/Jerusalem Biking Trail/Welcome Sabbath

Morning: We begin the day with a bike-fitting session at the Haas Promenade, overlooking Jerusalem. Here we'll get an overview of Jerusalem and discuss the site's role as the place where Abraham walked with his son Isaac before his "binding" for sacrifice as related in Genesis.Then we set off to ride the "Jerusalem Biking Trail" around the entire city, to appreciate its beauty and "get our riding legs".

Lunch: Packed Lunch en route. Lunches include a choice of sandwich, water or soft drink, fruit, and a dessert.

Dinner: At the hotel, enjoy a festive Sabbath dinner, which includes soup, breads, salads, mains, sides, desserts. Water and tea are included. Soft drinks, wine, and beer are available for purchase.

Evening: Travel by coach to the Western Wall where we will join thousands of Jews and visitors from around the world to welcome the Jewish Sabbath. Return to hotel by coach or choose to walk back with your Group Leader to enjoy the atmosphere of the Old City on Friday night.

Morning: We begin our exploration of Jerusalem's Old City by walking through its four quarters: Armenian, Jewish, Christian, and Moslem. We will gaze over the Mt. of Olives and the Temple Mount (Haraem el-Sharef) from rooftops. Our final stop will be at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, traditional site of the Crucifixion and burial of Jesus.

Lunch: In the hotel dining room, enjoy a buffet lunch. Soft drinks, wine, and beer are available for purchase. Some hot menu items are not available on the Sabbath due to kosher restrictions.

Afternoon: Afternoon study session on Issues in Contemporary Israeli Society.

Dinner: Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Evening: Depart the hotel with your Group Leader for the Tower of David "Night Spectacular" . This impressive light-and-sound show is displayed on walls under the Tower of David. Moving images from 20 projectors trace the dramatic history of Jerusalem from the time of Israelite kings to the modern era. The cast of historical characters includes King David, Romans, monks, Mohammed, Crusaders, Turks, and all the rest, accompanied by a lush musical score. Bring a sweater since it can be cool in Jerusalem at night.

Activity note: Riding for 20-30 miles, 4-5 hours with breaks, on hilly terrain and dirt paths.

Morning: We will depart Jerusalem by coach for Bet Shemesh. Then we will ride through the "Shefela" (the Biblical Coast Plain) and the "Land of Samson". After a rest/snack break, we continue ridng to the site of Hirbet Kaifah in the Ella Valley, where a young David faced off against the Philistine giant Goliath.

Lunch: We will enjoy a late lunch at the Ella Valley Wineries followed by wine tasting.

Dinner: In the hotel dining room, enjoy a buffet dinner. Soft drinks, wine, and beer are available for purchase.

Activity note: Biking distance 27 miles, on paved road, approximately 3 hours.

Morning: Check-out and depart hotel by coach to Mitzpeh Shalem. Ride along the shores of the Dead Sea, lowest point on earth.

Lunch: Packed Lunch en route. Lunches include a choice of sandwich, water or soft drink, fruit, and a dessert.

Afternoon: Leave your bike at the entrance to the Ein Gedi Nature Reserve and hike to the natural pools and waters of Nahal Daid where a young David hid from King Saul 3,000 years ago. Continue by coach to Ein Bokek to check-in at the hotel along the shores of the Dead Sea. Enjoy the swimming pool or float in the Dead Sea. There is also a full service spa and treatments may be ordered ahead of time for additional payment.

Activity note: 8.5 mile ride on flat paved road. Walking on dirt paths atop Masada and at Qumran.

Morning: After checking-out from the hotel choose to ride the 8.5 miles to Masada or travel there by coach. Ascend Herod's ancient fortress of Masada by the cable car. Atop the mountain, learn the painful story of the last chapter of the Judean revolt against Rome and explore the symbolism and questions that arise from this story and its tragic end. Descend by cable car to the visitor's center.

Lunch: Lunch stop at the Masada Visitor's Center cafeteria.

Afternoon: Continue by coach to the ancient site of Qumran, where a Second Temple Period Jewish community lived (often referred to as the Essenes) and where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered. Explore the complex relationship between the scrolls and modern Jewish life and their influence on interfaith dialogue in contemporary society. The site's archaeological remains include many ritual baths, a refectory, kilns, and evidence of date production. We continue by coach to Qasr el Yahud, an ancient baptismal site and traditional site of the crossing of the Israelites into the Land of Israel, led by Joshua as related in the book of Judges. We travel north along the Jordan River Valley to the Galilee.

Banias Nature Reserve/ Bird Watching in the Hula Valley

Activity note: Riding for 15 miles on road with slight descent and 10 miles on dirt trail with steeper descent. Total riding 3 to 4 hours.

Morning: Coach to the Banias Nature Reserve at the source of the Jordan River along the Lebanese Border. This site is identified as Caesaria Phillipi referred to in the New Testament as the place of Jesus' Great Revelation. From here we will ride through the beautiful Hula Valley, a major bird migration route along the Syrian-African rift. Over 500 million birds migrate from Europe and Asia through this area in the Fall and then again the Spring. We will ride along the road before picking up a trail along the Jordan River. There will be rest/snack/water breaks along the way.

Lunch: Packed Lunch en route. Lunches include a choice of sandwich, water or soft drink, fruit, and a dessert.

Afternoon: We will view birds and other animals at dusk at the Agamon Hahula Birding Center, in a special tractor-drawn safari vehicle for discreet viewing.

Activity note: 36 miles of gentle riding on paved roads.

Morning: Ascend the Golan Heights by coach to Mt. Bental. Outlook from this dormant volcano into Syria where we will receive a strategic briefing on what is going on in the other side of the border. We will then get on our bikes to ride the length of the Golan plateau from the north to the south. We will pass by wind turbines, the Gamla National Park, water reservoirs, and other beautiful vistas, to Kfar Haruv. There will be rest/snack/water breaks along the way.

Lunch: Packed Lunch en route. Lunches include a choice of sandwich, water or soft drink, fruit, and a dessert.

Afternoon: After enjoying a spectacular view over the Sea of Galilee and much of the Galilee, we travel by coach to the cosmopolitan city of Tel Aviv on the Mediterranean Coast.

Dinner: In the hotel dining room, enjoy a buffet dinner. Soft drinks, wine, and beer are available for purchase.

Activity note: Riding for 12 miles on flat dirt path and 3 miles on paved bike path, total 2-3 hours.

Morning: We will drive by coach to Tel Afek, at the sources of the Yarkon River which runs into the Mediterranean Sea. We will then ride along the river in the shade of eucalyptus trees to Tel Aviv on a dirt path. We will then transfer by coach to the Tel Aviv Promenade, where we'll continue to ride along the bustling Tel Aviv beach to the ancient port of Jaffa.

Lunch: We'll stop for a lunch break along the promenade.

Afternoon: Enjoy strolling through the weekly arts & crafts fair featuring local artisans in the historic Nahalat Binyamin neighborhood.

Dinner: At the hotel, enjoy a festive Sabbath dinner, which includes soup, breads, salads, mains, sides, desserts. Water and tea are included. Soft drinks, wine, and beer are available for purchase.

Morning: Enjoy a walking tour of "the first Hebrew city", as Tel Aviv is often called. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site boasting one of the greatest collections of Bauhaus architecture in the world.

Lunch: Enjoy a buffet lunch at the hotel dining room. Some hot menu items are not available on the Sabbath due to kosher restrictions.

Afternoon: Time at leisure to explore Tel Aviv at your own pace. Many museums and art galleries are open. Your group leader will be happy to make recommendations. Or enjoy the beach or Tel Aviv's famous "cafe culture". We then rendezvous for a summary and conclusion session. The Group Leader will lead a wrap-up session to review program highlights, share favorite experiences, and say farewell to new Road Scholar friends before dinner.

Dinner: Enjoy a farewell dinner at a restaurant in Tel Aviv's Yemenite Quarter. Served "family style", the menu includes a number of Israeli salads, fresh pita, hummus, falafel, grilled meats, and dessert with mint tea. Soft drinks and wine are included. Beer is available for purchase. This concludes our program.
