Travel to the Ozarks foothills for a week long immersion into the world of horsemanship. Experience the bond between human and horse for the week as you learn animal science basics, grooming, saddling, western riding style, & enjoy ranch life.

  • Groom, saddle and feed your horse all week as you experience a special relationship with your new friend and develop your equine behavior knowledge.
  • Depending on your skill, learn the basics of Western Riding, from tack and groundwork and neck reining, to English riding style and bareback lessons.
  • Enjoy Cowboy life with Dutch oven meals, a barn dance and a farrier demonstration with your new horse and human friends.

General Notes

The Retreat Difference: This unique, often basic and no-frills experience at a Road Scholar Retreat includes opportunities for early morning exercise, interaction with the local community for insight into local life, an authentic farm-to-table or locally sourced meal, a live performance or event, and a value-priced single room. Group size no greater than 12.

Passionate about riding horses since she was young, Melissa became an instructor with The Certified Horsemanship Association in both English and Western riding. Following the horse and ranch career path, she started out as a part-time wrangler at the Triangle Y Ranch and worked her way up to ranch director. She loves sharing her passion of horses and horsemanship skills with others. Melissa also holds a BS in animal science.

She enjoys working closely and getting to know all of the program participants. She is dedicated and passionate about Road Scholar programs. Shannon is the adult program director at the YMCA of the Ozarks Trout Lodge.

Kristy was raised up on her family farm just 30 minutes from Triangle Y Ranch and has a passion for horses. Kristy started at the ranch in 2010 as a part time wrangler and was promoted to ranch program director in 2014. She has worked with many different breeds of horses and loves to share her knowledge. Kristy has experience breeding miniature horses and currently breeds Friesians. She has given many lessons and truly loves teaching people about these wonderful animals.
