Field Trips today are on foot in the heart of Bayonne. Plan on walking the equivalent of 3 miles over the course of the day, including walking and standing in the museums.
Daily breakfast buffet includes cold and hot choices including eggs, cereals, yogurt, cheese, charcuterie, breads and pastries, juice, coffee, hot chocolate and tea.
We begin the day with a lecture on the Basque history and culture. Even today, the origins of the Basque people and their unique language remain shrouded in mystery. In all of Europe, the Basque people retain the purest forms of their language and heritage. Persecuted over the eras because of an independent spirit and proud heritage, the Basque culture remains distinct from that of neighboring regions. The accomplishments of Basques have traced a path around the world - in sport, in exploration and in international business – evidence of their skill and prowess. After the lecture, we walk across the river to the Basque Museum, whose exhibits illustrate the discussion points of our lecture.
In the Old town of Bayonne, pause in our exploration for a light meal near the market place.
With our local expert, explore on foot of the medieval district of Bayonne. Discover the cathedral, the city’s fortifications and its timbered houses.
This evening we walk across the river to a traditional Basque Cider House. A copious meal, served family style, includes traditional fare: Omelet, beef ribs, fish, French fries and salad, and a selection of cider from the barrels – all you can drink! Locals come here for a casual and fun evening. (Wine and beer and other beverages available for purchase.)
