Registration; Orientation; Local History

Afternoon: After checking into the motel, come to the conference room between 3:00 and 4:30 p.m. to pick up your program materials, badges and to review program arrangements with our staff. If you arrive late, ask for your program materials at motel check-in.

Dinner: Dinner will be at 5:30 at a local venue.

Evening: This evening's activities include orientation, a schedule review, a colorful history of our local area.

Visit beach; See wild ponies and waterfowl; Misty movie

Breakfast: Hot breakfast at the Refuge Inn, including a variety of food and beverage options.

Morning: We'll board the bus for a tour of Chincoteague Island, a visit to Beebe Ranch, the original home of Misty, and the it's off to the beach on Assateague Island. where we'll walk along the beach as your guide describes barrier island ecology.

Lunch: 12:00 noon - lunch at the Museum of Chincoteague Island

Afternoon: We'll board a bus for a guided tour to parts of Assateague Island and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge that are restricted and not generally open to the public. We will have opportunities to see wild ponies, petite Sika elk, deer, migrating and native waterfowl and other island wildlife.

Dinner: 5:30 p.m. Dinner at a local restaurant.

Evening: After dinner we will visit the newly restored Island Theater where you'll learn about the famous Chincoteague pony herd, from when they first landed on our shores to their current existence on Assateague. Then we will enjoy watching the movie "Misty of Chincoteague" on the big screen.

NASA Trip/Refuge Bike Ride/ Kids' Pizza Party/Pirate Lore

Activity note: This includes a guided five mile bicycle ride over mostly level ground..

Breakfast: Hot breakfast at the Refuge Inn, including a variety of food and beverage options.

Morning: Learn about what is in store for the NASA space programs at the NASA Wallops Space Flight Facility Center. Enjoy the hands-on exhibits at the Visitor Center as you learn about orbital and sub-orbital rockets, space missions and aeronautics. You'll even get to try on a space suit.

Lunch: We'll have lunch at a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Meet at the bicycle shop run by the Refuge Inn and bicycle with your expert guide through the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and look for local waterfowl, wildlife and ponies. Observe first-hand the environmental impact of natural and man-made changes to the barrier island landscape.

Dinner: We'll enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Evening: Learn more about the local lore of pirates, buried treasure, and wild ponies with interpreter, Maria Grenchik. Following her talk tour the museum exhibits and try the museum's scavenger hunt.

Breakfast: Hot breakfast at the Refuge Inn, including a variety of food and beverage options.

Morning: Travel to the Bateman Center in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Learn about wildlife in this area and local and Federal conservation efforts. Take a trip to our newly renovated lighthouse. Your group leader will help you understand the role of this facility in the Civil War, and it's dramatic "change in location" with the shifting sands. Hardy souls may climb to the top of the lighthouse if time permits for breathtaking views.

Lunch: 11:30a.m. - box lunch on board a tour boat.

Afternoon: Cruise around Chincoteague and Assateague Islands with a local boat captain, and learn about how barrier islands reshape themselves over time. Take in the sights of waterfowl, wild ponies, and seafood harvesting operations. View the lighthouse and the Wallops Island launch site from the water. Bring binoculars and your cameras. Cruise ends by 1:30pm. After returning to the motel, enjoy the rest of the afternoon on your own. Explore the island, shop or relax in the motel's indoor pool.

Dinner: We;ll have dinner, followed by a musical performance.

Morning: A native island waterman will show you how modern aquaculture has changed the age-old traditional ways of growing and harvesting the famous salty Chincoteague clams and oysters.
