On this delicious adventure in New Mexico, travel through Southwest history not with a time machine but through the heritage foods of the people who have lived here for the past 11,000 years! Find out how Native American people cultivated, gathered, hunted and cooked, and learn about the food influences of many different cultures who settled in New Mexico. Then try your hand at cooking some of the Southwest’s most famous foods and traditional dishes, and finish the week with a full stomach and some new cooking skill to take home with you.

  • Make tortillas and salsa at the Santa Fe School of Cooking, and prepare a traditional Feast Day meal at the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo home of a local family.
  • Enjoy a "Feast and Float" trip as you raft on the Rio Grande and enjoy a traditional lunch al fresco with a Pueblo Indian family.
  • Stroll around the Santa Fe Farmers' Market, and make some folk art with an award-winning artist.

Frankie Nazario Lucero is a native Santa Fean with roots tracing back to the early 1600s. His wood-carvings and traditional retables, created from techniques and materials dating back to the 18th century, have earned him numerous awards, and his work can be found in museums and collections around the world. He also teaches at Desert Montessori School and leads outreach classes, where he shares his craft and knowledge with the Santa Fe youth community.
