Activity note: Following the Welcome Dinner we stroll across the street to the beautiful lakeside Stuart Auditorium for the opening night performances of Folkmoot!

Afternoon: Check-In at the Terrace Hotel Lobby from 4:00 pm to 4:30 pm. Registration and Orientation to the action-packed schedule for the next couple of days. Visit www.folkmootusa.org to see the line-up of performers!

Dinner: Dinner in Hotel dinning room overlooking the lake. All meals served buffet style.

Evening: Following the Welcome Dinner we stroll across the street to the beautiful lakeside Stuart Auditorium for the opening night performances of Folkmoot!

Activity note: Standing/walking while viewing approx. 1/2 hour parade, walking to explore downtown area.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in hotel dining room

Morning: We travel to downtown Main Street, Waynesville for the Parade of Nations, all the visiting dance troupes and bands with their gorgeous traditional costumes parade down the street & give min-performances. Afterwards there is time to explore the small but charming downtown section of Waynesville before re-boarding the bus.

Lunch: The Terrace Hotel Buffet.

Afternoon: In preparation for tomorrow's field trip we have an overview of how songs, craft skills and dance were preserved in the southern Appalachian mountains. Our topic begins with the Cherokee, flows through early mission programs, ballad collectors, the development of industrial schools, influence of Black Mountain college and the establishment of WNC as an international art/craft destination.

Dinner: Buffet dinner in hotel dining room

Evening: After dinner we'll take a field trip to Haywood Community College to enjoy a Folkmoot dance.

Activity note: Walking on concrete floors at Folk Art Center, Craft Fair and on sidewalks downtown. Possible cumulative walking miles for the day from 2 miles to 4 miles depending on individual choice.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in hotel dining room

Morning: We ride the chartered bus approx 40 minutes to the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Stroll through the Southern Highland Craft Guild's Permanent Collection exhibit highlighting significant pieces from the 1880s to the present, including work discussed in yesterday's history overview, enjoy 2 craft demonstrations & the extensive gallery. Re-board the bus for a short ride to the heart of downtown Asheville and the Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands, established 1948, at its current location inside the U.S. Cellular Center, originally the Asheville Civic Center.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants or cafes of downtown Asheville NC.

Afternoon: During the Craft Fair enjoy live craft demonstrations both inside & outside the venue, concerts by local groups, educational displays and demonstrations by local ikebana, quilting and weaving groups, along with over 100 booths of work by juried members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild.

Dinner: Buffet dinner at the Terrace Hotel overlooking scenic Lake Junaluska.

Evening: Dance instruction by local performer. Get up and join together in one of the many dance forms found here in the Appalachians.
