With three 18 hole golf courses — Pine Lakes, Indian Mound and Oleander — Jekyll Island has something for golfers of all ability levels to enjoy. In addition to its spectacular 18 hole courses, Jekyll Island also boasts Great Dunes, the historic nine hole course. Outdoor: No Sweat
Golfers of all ability levels welcomed. Standing and swinging clubs during morning instruction, and playing 18 holes during three afternoons. Carts provided for afternoon play. At the hotel, there are steps leading from the Bellstand to the veranda at the entrance (there is a handicap lift available). There are also 4 steps leading to the front desk. There is a gift shop at the hotel that has steps as well, which include 3 steps up and 3 steps down.

He taught for the Phil Ritson Mel Sole Golf Academy, and worked as a professional, director, and manager at various clubs throughout the southeast.

Doug Ballenger has been a member of the PGA since 1982. He has been a head professional at clubs in Charlotte, NC and Murrells Inlet, SC. He has taught private and group lessons to all skill levels, from beginner to college-level players. He was a Master Club Fitter for Golfsmith from 2012 to 2016.

Activity note: Hotel check in from 4:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration. After you have your room assignment, join us at the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff, get any updated information, and confirm the time and location of the Orientation session. If you arrive late, please locate your Group Leader and let them know you have arrived.

Dinner: In a private banquet room at the hotel.

Evening: Orientation. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. We’ll also discuss arrangements for getting to/from the golf club, renting its clubs, and getting back to the hotel at the end of the day. Small group golf instruction typically involves 8-10 participants. The number of courses we will be able to play each day will depend on tournaments or other club activities at the time of the program. We’ll use passenger vans getting to the Jekyll Island Golf Clubhouse. We will start each day at the Clubhouse and then walk from one teaching station to the next. Golf rounds after lunch will be assigned by the Jekyll Island Golf Pro to one of three 18-hole courses. Periods in the daily schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.

Activity note: Getting in/out of passenger van. Standing and swinging clubs for extended periods; golf carts provided for afternoon play.

Breakfast: In the hotel’s Victorian-era Grand Dining Room.

Morning: We’ll hop into a passenger van and ride to the Jekyll Island Golf Club, where we’ll begin our group instruction. Today, our golf pros will provide instruction in putting, full swing, and set-up fundamentals, along with course management skills.

Lunch: At the Golf Club restaurant.

Afternoon: We’ll put what we’ve learned into practice and play eighteen holes of golf. Jekyll Island has been a golf destination since 1898, when Jekyll Island Club members added the first course on the island. Today, there are sixty-three holes of golf on three 18-hole courses: Pine Lakes, Indian Mound, and the popular Oleander. There is also a nine-hole course. Our pros will assign the course available for afternoon play according to availability at the time of the program.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Evening: We’ll gather with our Group Leader who will introduce this evening’s local Jekyll Island expert.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We’ll ride to the golf course for this morning’s group instruction. With our golf pros, we’ll concentrate on the short game, chipping and pitching, and full swing mechanics.

Lunch: At the Golf Club restaurant.

Afternoon: We’ll play another eighteen holes this afternoon after our morning instruction. Call the Jekyll Island Club bellstand for a complimentary ride back to the hotel when ready.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Evening: Sea turtles use the Golden Isles beaches for nesting. We’ll be joined by a local expert who will tell us about this threatened species and how people can help them survive.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We’ll ride to the golf course where our instructors will cover bunker shots and drivers/fairway woods during our group instruction session. Call the Jekyll Island Club bellstand for a complimentary ride back to the hotel when ready.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to have what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Afternoon: Free time. This period of time has been set aside for your personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Please note that the period scheduled for free time is subject to change depending on local circumstances and opportunities for independent exploration. If the history of hotel interests you, join the group for a Behind the Scenes tour at the Jekyll Island Club this afternoon. You might like to take a leisurely walk to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, to the historic district, or visit the island’s pristine beaches and nature reserves.

Dinner: On your own to have what you like.

Evening: At leisure.

Morning: At the Jekyll Island Golf Club, our instructors will provide video swing analysis using computer software and will also conduct a question and answer session.

Lunch: At the Golf Club restaurant.

Afternoon: We will play our final round of eighteen holes. Call the Jekyll Island Club bellstand for a complimentary ride back to the hotel when ready.

Dinner: At the hotel. Share favorite experiences and enjoy camaraderie with new Road Scholar friends during our farewell dinner.

Evening: We’ll be joined by a talented local artist and musician. Prepare for check-out and departure after our final session in the morning.
