At a Glance

Join historian and former US foreign service officer, Todd Greentree, as he explores the enduring legacy of Thucydides' “History of the Peloponnesian War.” Discover the causes and consequences of the conflict between Athens and Sparta that shook the Hellenic World for 27 years in the 5th century BC. So accurate was Thucydides’ account, that it is possible to follow the war on the ground in Greece today, and so insightful were his interpretations of human nature, that the book is considered the touchstone of modern history and remains a foundational guide to the varying character and unchanging nature of war. Learn how the Founding Fathers took warning from Thucydides' narrative of Athens' fall and democracy's collapse during its Golden Age. Gain insights into how generations have viewed the Peloponnesian War as a paradigm for great power competition, such as during the Cold War, and how Thucydides offers the long view when considering potential conflicts between the United States and China today.
