Was the war in Afghanistan always unwinnable? Could an alternative military and political strategy have made this conflict unnecessary? This fascinating three-part series brings you an insider’s perspective on America’s longest foreign war. Former career U.S. Foreign Service Officer Todd Greentree, who served in five wars including Afghanistan, examines why the United States failed in its mission. And he’ll explore the implications of the Afghan war on potential conflicts our country will face in the future. In part one of this series, you’ll learn about Afghanistan’s turbulent history and how the U.S. response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 unwittingly spawned Islamic extremism and set the road to 9/11.
