At a Glance

The fight for civil rights has been an on-going struggle in American life, but the movement peaked in the 1950s and 1960s when black as well as white performers contributed songs to the cause that either protested prejudicial treatment in the United States or promoted black pride. In this hour, we’ll discuss and play some of the more important songs popularized during this period, performed by artists including Sam Cooke, Joan Baez, the Staple Singers and more.
