At a Glance

In 2022 we celebrate a wondrous feat — the fifth centenary of the conclusion of Magellan’s and Elcano’s voyage of circumnavigation (1519 to 1522). During those three years, men of exceptional courage, endurance and skill undertook a dangerous voyage into the unknown. We will embark with their intrepid crew on an epic journey round the world in three parts. In this first session, some of the topics that we’ll address are the competition between Portugal and Spain for access to spices, valued since Antiquity and associated with fantastic tales, and the scientific knowledge promoted by the House of Trade of Seville — called “the Cape Canaveral of the 16th Century." Please note: The three lectures celebrating aspects of the voyage are offered separately and will require separate registration.
