We believe that educational travel is one of the greatest ways to learn. Our expert instructors engage you in immersive experiences that can help you absorb new information as well as transform your whole way of thinking. But we also understand that educational travel is a privilege not afforded to all older adults. We’re on a mission to change that.
Whether you’re looking for ways to travel for free or just ways to save when you travel, we’ve put together a helpful guide with tips for traveling on a budget to help us reach our mission to enable ALL adults to learn, discover and travel.
1. Apply for a Scholarship
Just like colleges and universities, Road Scholar offers financial assistance. Each year, thanks to our generous donors, Road Scholar awards more than 300 scholarships for programs in North America to participants who may not be able to afford a program on their own.
2. Apply for a Caregiver Grant
Our amazing donors also fund Caregiver Grants to help family caregivers offset the costs of arranging substitute care while they attend a Road Scholar learning adventure. If you care for an ill or disabled relative, click to learn more and apply for a Caregiver Grant.
3. See our Best Value Programs
While we strive for all of our programs to be a great value to all participants, our “Best Value” collection is made up of programs that our participants said offered extraordinary value—programs where their dollars went the farthest.
4. Search Programs by Price
You can also search all of our programs by price to find the best fit for your budget. Check it out!
5. Keep Your Eye on Our Special Offers
We try to keep prices as low as possible, and as programs develop and participants enroll, sometimes we’re able to offer special discounts on programs or free airfare to make things easier on your wallet. Keep an eye on our special offers, as they are updated often!
If you’re traveling solo: Our Special Offers often include programs where we’ve been able to negotiate single rooms at no extra cost to the participant!
6. Invite a Friend
We never add fees from Road Scholar to penalize single or solo travelers. But when you aren’t splitting the cost of the room with someone else, rooms are typically more expensive for one person. That’s why recruiting a friend or family member to travel with you will save you money on all of our programs. When you enroll online, just select the “double room” option. Then a few clicks later we’ll ask if you have someone you’d like to room with. If you are enrolling with us over the phone, just mention that you’d like to share your room with a friend.
Road Scholar recently added new triple-rooming option, available on some programs. That means if you’re traveling with two companions, you can all share a room and save! Call us at 800-454-5768 to learn more about our Triple Rooming options.
Road Scholar’s Private Group Charters let groups reserve most Road Scholar programs just for their members. If you can recruit 20 paying friends, Road Scholar will waive the cost for the next participant (which could be you)!
7. Let us find you a roommate
Just like in college, we can match you with a roommate on your program of choice if there are other solo travelers who enroll. This allows both of you to avoid paying any single supplements. Plus, sharing a room with another Road Scholar can be a great way to meet a new friend right off the bat and form a lifelong bond! Just select the “double room” option when you enroll, and we’ll pair you with a roommate of your gender.
8. Travel during off-peak dates
Traveling during the “shoulder season” (dates outside a destination’s peak season) not only means lower prices, but also fewer crowds. This can be a great way to check a dream destination off your bucket list that you’ve never thought you could afford. Give our specialists a call at 800-454-5768 to inquire about off-peak programs, search our adventures by date, or browse our collection of “Winter In…” programs designed for off-peak travel.
9. Become a Road Scholar Ambassador
If you’ve been on Road Scholar program already and are interested in saving on future programs, consider becoming a Road Scholar Ambassador! Our ambassador program allows participants to earn credits that you can use to pay for a program.
10. Refer a Friend
One of those frequent contests we mentioned is our monthly refer-a-friend raffle. Introduce a friend to Road Scholar and you’ll be entered to win up to $2,000 Road Scholar gift certificate and the friend you referred gets a $500 gift certificate!
