Our Commitment to Sustainability

Road Scholar has taken several steps towards making educational travel more sustainable. To counter the impact of travel to Road Scholar programs, we continue to invest in offsetting carbon emissions created from travel. We also prioritize local hotels and restaurants on our programs, and our leaders are trained in protecting sensitive cultural sites and respecting social norms in the communities we visit. Learn more about our commitment to sustainability, and read our blog post to see an example of how Road Scholar uses sustainable practices in places like Denali National Park.

Connect with Nature on Learning Adventures

Many of our learning adventures involve getting outside and gaining an appreciation for nature through new knowledge. From the national parks of Alaska to the biodiversity of Costa Rica to online adventures and lectures where you can learn more about the environment, there are no shortage of ways to appreciate and explore nature.

There are also many opportunities to engage directly with your environment on our learning adventures. In Montana, you can learn about the sustainable ranching methods of BBar Ranch, located on the edge of Yellowstone National Park. In Fiji, you can snorkel along coral reefs and hear about community-focused conservation initiatives. And in southern Africa, you can discuss conservation efforts while searching for elephants, zebras, hippos and more.

If you’re interested in getting your hands dirty, you can learn and volunteer with other Road Scholars as you help preserve and maintain the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. On this adventure, you’ll assist with a variety of projects ranging from repairing and clearing woodland trails and walkways to cleaning up undeveloped beaches, preserving historic sites or working among the Museum’s collection of artifacts and records.
