1

Activity note: Hotel check-in from 4:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in.

Dinner: In a private banquet room at the hotel, we’ll enjoy a plated meal with salad, entrée, dessert, coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Periods in the daily schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Watercolor Instruction & Painting, Open Studio Practice

Activity note: Full day of instruction and painting.

Breakfast: In the hotel’s Victorian-era Grand Dining Room, we’ll enjoy a buffet with an assortment of seasonal fresh fruits, yogurt, scrambled eggs, hot and cold cereals, breakfast meats, breakfast potatoes, grits, homemade pastries, toast, bagels, and muffins, and a daily special breakfast entrée, plus coffee, tea, milk, juices, and water.

Morning: Our instructor begins the program with an exercise designed to get us seeing, drawing, and opening to painting. The class focuses on elements of composition, contour, and value, along with an introduction to color—masking, mixing, and applying color. We will then begin working on our first drawings and paintings, incorporating these techniques.

Lunch: In a banquet room at the hotel, we’ll enjoy a selection of salad, sandwich or soup, plus coffee, tea, and water.

Afternoon: We’ll continue painting with individual supervision and suggestions by our instructor. Time to focus, immerse and respond—one on one.

Dinner: Plated hotel meal.

Evening: We will finish up the first day’s painting with open studio practice.

Watercolor Instruction & Painting

Activity note: Full day of instruction and painting, with possibility of outdoor class.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: Our instructor will demonstrate other drawing and watercolor techniques. We may work inside or outside weather dependent, and explore land-seascape elements such as sky, water, trees, marsh grasses, sea oats. We’ll then practice these elements and begin our small paintings.

Lunch: Hotel meal.

Afternoon: We will continue to explore a variety of techniques and exercises designed to enhance creativity and give an open, loose feeling to our work. We’ll also continue working on our paintings.

Dinner: Plated hotel meal.

Evening: We will have an open studio with the goal to complete one or more small paintings and begin to think in terms of series.

Watercolor Instruction, Free Time

Activity note: Full day of instruction and painting.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: Onto more painting! Our instructor will introduce other techniques and assist one-on-one with participants as each begins or continues to find their visual voice. The works can range from very realistic to more fluid and abstract.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Suggestions include the Club Café, Jekyll Island Club Hotel's popular bakery-delicatessen; the Victorian-era Grand Dining Room; or the Courtyard at Crane, which offers casual fine dining a short stroll from the main hotel.

Afternoon: Free time. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Dinner: On your own.

Evening: At leisure.

Watercolor Instruction, Art Show Presentations

Activity note: Full day of instruction and painting.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: We will immerse ourselves in our work today, done directly from observation or from photos, postcards, or any other idea to inspire the subject of our final paintings. One painting? Maybe a series? Maybe a drawing? We will create our compositions, plan approaches, and begin painting!

Lunch: Hotel meal.

Afternoon: We will continue to work on our paintings in preparation for the evening art show, with one-on-one critiques as the day progresses.

Dinner: Plated hotel meal.

Evening: We will have an informal art show in our classroom to display our paintings, celebrating all of our work inspired by the island. Hotel guests and staff will also be invited to attend.

Watercolor Q&A, Program Concludes

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: Our instructor will lead a final question and answer session and wrap up to summarize what we’ve learned. This concludes our program.
