Activity note: Evening orientation, introduction to instructors in lecture room setting

Afternoon: Check in is after 3:00 PM. EASTERN DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME.

Dinner: The Trustees' Office Dining Room features regional Kentucky dishes and some Shaker dishes. Dinner is served by candlelight, and will include entree', salad, vegetables, hot bread and dessert.

Evening: Welcome and orientation at 7:00 PM EASTERN DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME.

Kentucky River Hike

Activity note: This hike will take us down to the Kentucky River, with a sack lunch served at the Shaker Landing. After lunch we will hike along the river bottom, checking out wildflowers, birds and trees in this unique area. An evening program includes slides of "spring bloomers."

Breakfast: Country Buffet Breakfast includes bacon and sausage, eggs, gravy, grits, hot and cold fruits, oatmeal, cold cereals, biscuits and pumpkin muffins, coffee, and juice.

Morning: Join Don Pelly and Jim Gentry as we travel through thousands of years of geologic time hiking down to the Kentucky River. Along the way we will discover a number of wildflowers that grow only in the secluded climate of the river lowlands.

Lunch: A sack lunch will be delivered to us to eat at the Shaker landing before we continue the hike.

Afternoon: Hiking continues along the Kentucky River, and we will also see ruins of Shaker buildings, river features, waterfalls and different flowers and vegetation.

Dinner: Dinner by candlelight in the Trustees' Office Dining Room with regional specialties and some Shaker dishes, includes salad, entree', vegetables, dessert, hot breads and choice of beverage.

Evening: Slide presentation on "Spring Bloomers" - a sampling of Kentucky's beautiful spring wildflowers - by instructor Jim Gentry

Plant Identification, Savannah Woodland, Tree Identification

Activity note: Morning will be spent in Shaker Village identifying trees. In the afternoon travel just a mile away to see the remnant of the savannah woodland that existed in the area prior to white settlement. Evening program will include a lecture about Shaker Herbs & Seeds.

Breakfast: Country Buffet Breakfast includes bacon and sausage, eggs, cold and hot fruit, cold cereal, oatmeal, grits, biscuits and pumpkin muffins, gravy, coffee and juice.

Morning: Program on woody plant identification takes us around the Shaker village, looking at trees and other woody plants. Group will be divided into smaller groups for better student/instructor ratio.

Lunch: Lunch in the Trustees' Office Dining Room will include soup and salad, or sandwich, with cookies and fresh fruit, and choice of beverage.

Afternoon: Afternoon hike along the Heritage Trail, through woodlands where the Shakers built their mills and a bridge across Shawnee Run. The bird observation area is here, as is an amazing variety of woodland flowers.

Dinner: Dinner by candlelight at the Trustees' Office Dining Room, serving regional specialties and some Shaker dishes. Dinner includes salad, entree', vegetables, hot breads, dessert and choice of beverage.

Evening: Evening program on Shaker herb and seed industry by a local herbalist will explore useful plants and flowers.

Meadows Morning Hike, Afternoon Hike Along Heritage Trail

Activity note: Instructors will lead 2 hikes through very different areas of Shaker Village and participants will discover an amazing number of wildflowers. Meals in the Trustees' Office Dining Room.

Breakfast: Country Buffet Breakfast at the Trustees' Office Dining Room includes bacon, sausage, eggs, grits, cold and hot fruit, oatmeal, grits, cold cereal, biscuits, pumpkin muffins, gravy, coffee or tea and juice.

Morning: Hike to the West Lot of the village, where open meadows abound in wildflowers. This area has been restored to its native savannah condition by replanting warm-weather grasses and native flowers.

Lunch: Lunch in the Trustees' Office Dining Room will include soup and salad, or sandwich, with cookies and fresh fruit, and choice of beverage.

Afternoon: Free afternoon to tour Shaker Village, visit crafts demonstrations, or travel off-site to visit attractions in the surrounding area (transportation to off-site attractions is on your own).

Dinner: Dinner by candlelight in the Trustees' Office Dining room with regional specialties and some Shaker dishes. Dinner will include salad, entree', vegetables, hot breads, dessert, and choice of beverage.

Evening: Evening walk and program on native grasses and prairies, including discussion of Shaker Village's "green" strategy.

Shaker Village Nature Preserve Hike

Activity note: This hike will include some strenuous terrain as we hike through an area restored to its native savannah condition. Evening performance of Shaker music by soloist.

Breakfast: Country buffet Breakfast in the Trustees' Office Dining Room includes bacon and sausage, eggs, cold and hot fruit, grits, gravy, oatmeal, cold cereals, biscuits and pumpkin muffins, coffee and juice.

Morning: Hike to the West Lot area, through meadowlands filled with wildflowers. Instructors will help to identify different species of flowers, birds, and vegetation.

Lunch: Lunch in the Trustees' Office Dining Room will include soup and salad or sandwich, cookies and fresh fruit.

Afternoon: Hike to an area near the village where the remnant of the native savannah woodland can be seen - this area looks much as it did prior to white settlement.

Dinner: Dinner by candlelight in the Trustees' Office Dining Room will include regional specialities and some Shaker dishes. Dinner includes salad, entree', vegetables passed family-style, hot breads, dessert and choice of beverage.

Evening: Solo performance of Shaker music by candlelight in the magnificent 1820 Shaker Meeting House as our program draws to an end.

Activity note: At Shaker Village's garden participants can learn about the Shakers' farming and efforts of today to use sustainable practices and employ local sources of food.

Breakfast: Country Buffet Breakfast in the Trustees' Office Dining Room includes bacon and sausage, eggs, grits, gravy, cold and hot fruit, cold cereals, oatmeal, biscuits and pumpkin muffins, coffee and juice.

Morning: Dylan Kennedy, our Farm & Garden Manager, will lead a walk and talk through the garden that supplies food to the dining room. Participants will discuss sustainable agricultural practices, and learn about the local food movement while enjoying the beauty of spring plants.

Lunch: Lunch in the Trustees' Office Dining Room. Participants will have the option of signing up for a box lunch to take with them after check-out at 11 a.m.
