Imagine sailing along the South of France onboard a vessel that’s not only an homage to sailing’s history, but a testament to modern comfort and amenities. Join us onboard the Golden Horizon, the world’s largest square-rigged sailing ship for a learning adventure that begins in the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona and journeys to the Italian island of Sardinia and into the South of France. Enjoy a true sailing experience on this replica of a 1913-built ship as the captain plots the course using local winds and currents, and delight in ocean views from your cabin. With experts versed in local history and culture, learn about architecture and art in Barcelona as you spend two full nights in the city. Sail to the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, enjoy a walking exploration of Nice and sample wines during a visit to a vineyard in the heart of Provence on this inspirational voyage.
Activity Level
Keep the Pace
Walking 3-5 miles per day over uneven surfaces and some inclines; stairs without railings, standing for two hours at a time. While the Golden Horizon is a new vessel with modern amenities, it is modeled after a historic sailing ship, and does not include an elevator on board. Participants should be prepared to have their “sea legs” as ocean currents and wind may make the ship rock from time to time. Optional health classes and water activities are available.

Best of all, you’ll…

  • Begin your learning adventure with two nights in Barcelona and enjoy field trips to the Barri Gotic — Gothic Quarter — and the Picasso Museum.
  • Delight in a walking field trip of Ajaccio, Corsica to learn about the history of this French island before embarking on both an on-foot and motor coach exploration of Nice.
  • Explore Sardinia, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean known for its wealth of Roman, Phoenician and Byzantine history.
  • Join your local expert for an exploration of Aix-en-Provence, known for its many historical sites including the Saint Sauveur Cathedral and Palace of Justice, and enjoy a field trip to a local winery.
  • Thrill in breathtaking views from your cabin on the Golden Horizon — each guest room is ocean facing!

The many of problems to be overcome included not only financial difficulties but local authorities and a house staff who initially felt no loyalty to the new Signorina, but who gradually accepted her as a respected member of their small community.
