In July 1940 Britain was in grave danger as it stood alone against the might of Nazi Germany. After the defeat of France there was a risk that the Nazis would seize the powerful French navy and use it to spearhead an invasion of Britain. To head off the danger, Churchill dispatched a fleet to negotiate with French naval officers at their anchorage of Mers-el-Kebir in Algeria. Churchill hoped the French could be persuaded to join the Royal Navy, but if negotiations failed, he had to contemplate desperate measures to prevent the ships falling into German hands. This lecture tells the dramatic, tragic, and controversial story of how Churchill was eventually forced to make ‘the most unnatural and painful’ decision of his life by ordering the destruction of the French fleet.
