We’ll walk to Bergen railway station to begin a full-day field trip experiencing “Norway in a nutshell®” by train, bus, and boat with our Group Leader. Throughout the field trip, our Group Leader will provide informative commentary on the history, geology, and culture of the areas we’ll explore. We’ll board a train at the station and ride along the rail route with the highest altitude in northern Europe, passing through beautiful fjord and mountain scenery on our way to the lakeside village of Voss. At the station in Voss, we’ll board a bus and ride alongside the Strandaelvi and Nærøydalselvi rivers to Gudvangen at the head of the Nærøyfjord. We’ll take to the water here, boarding a boat to ride through branches of the iconic Sognefjord system. The Sognefjord as a whole is the largest and deepest of more than 1000 fjords in Norway.
We’ll have packed lunches from the hotel to enjoy during the study cruise, including sandwiches, snacks, and drinks.
Our study cruise will finish at Flåm, where we’ll board a train and enjoy majestic views as we ride the Flåm Railway to Myrdal, which is above the tree line. This railway line is an engineering marvel, twisting and turning across the mountainsides and passing the dramatic Kjosfossen waterfall. At Myrdal, we’ll board another train for the journey back to Bergen.
On your own to enjoy what you like.
