Activity note: Beale Street is a two block stroll from the hotel. Sun Studio field trip takes you upstairs with no elevator in this historical building.
Morning: Participants from the American Cruise will be picked up at the Beale Street Landing upon ship docking. With our expert on board, we will see and hear the history of Memphis while on a driving overview of the city. Afterwards, we will stop at Sun Studio, a recording studio opened by rock pioneer Sam Phillips in 1950 and claimed to be the birthplace of rock ‘n roll. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and many more made their name here through the ‘50s. See memorabilia and hear recordings that rocked the world with the new sound of Rock'nRoll as you stand in the very place that Elvis recorded. Feel the energy of the music with the young experts of Sun Studio that will make you want to jump up and shout!
Lunch: We'll enjoy lunch and a lecture about Beale Street at a well-known restaurant located on Beale Street. Lunch will be from a select menu with three entrée choices to choose from including sides and coffee, water, soft drinks and tea. Additional beverages for purchase.
Afternoon: After lunch, we will travel by motorcoach to the National Civil Rights Museum, a privately-owned complex of museums and historic buildings built around the former Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968. We’ll follow a timeline that charts the course of events around the assassination and the impact and legacy of the civil rights movement. This museum is self guided. There are two buildings in the experience. We will begin within the original Lorraine Motel structure and continue through the Boarding House exhibits within the Young & Morrow and Boarding House buildings across the street from the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King was assassinated. Our motor coach will return to the hotel at 4:00 pm. If you want to spend more time at the museum, you may take the public trolley back to Main Street and walk 2 blocks to the hotel.
Dinner: Dinner will be on your own. There are many restaurants within easy walking distance of the hotel. A list will be provided and the group leader will be happy to assist anyone.
Evening: At leisure.
