Watch in wonder as our premier floating campus, the Aegean Odyssey, transports you to epic learning on the other side of the world. Beginning in Cairo, you’ll join local experts in seven countries on an epic journey that brings you up close to some of the world’s greatest treasures, from Jordan’s enigmatic Petra to India’s iconic Taj Mahal to Myanmar’s ancient city of Bagan. Your days at sea will be filled with expert-led lectures, time to browse the ship’s well-stocked library and dining experiences designed to complement the regions we’ll be exploring. You’ll spend your days on land discovering both iconic landmarks and off-the-beaten-path gems as you immerse yourself in the local culture and history of each enthralling new destination. Pack a small overnight bag in preparation for five special field trips on land, complete with hotel stays, including a visit to Jordan’s legendary lost city of Petra and a two-day, expert-led exploration of Myanmar’s ancient kingdom of Bagan. Through it all, you’ll be in the company of Road Scholars as dedicated to learning and adventure as you are. This is no cruise — it’s the odyssey of a lifetime!

Best of all, you'll ...

  • Spend a day in the Lost City of Petra, where you’ll explore the Treasury, theater, water works and other awe-inspiring ancient monuments.
  • Fly to Delhi, India for expert-led city field trips exploring the impressive architecture of New Delhi and the bustling bazars of Old Delhi, followed by an exploration of Agra Fort and a sunrise visit to the gleaming Taj Mahal in Agra.
  • Fly to Myanmar’s ancient kingdom of Bagan, where you’ll explore numerous temples with an expert before observing the art of Bagan lacquer-ware at a local workshop in the afternoon.
  • Sail exclusively with ship mates who are all Road Scholar participants, as dedicated to learning as you are.

General Notes

We’ll have up to 350 Road Scholar participants on the ship, divided into groups of 35 for shore excursions. Please note roommate matching is available in categories F, H and L. Want to experience even more of the world’s wonders? Check out our full World Academy voyage (23678).

Activity note: Getting on/off motorcoach. Walking throughout the day; uneven surfaces, loose gravel, cracked sidewalks. Myanmar has no laws for building code and regulation for those with disabilities; one should not expect ramps, railings, or elevators in any site or building. Shoulders and knees to be covered at the temple; easily removable footwear suggested for entrance temples. Flight is approximately 1.5 hours.

Morning: Known as the city of four million pagodas, Bagan is one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia. Today, one can find over 2,000 pagodas, temples and monasteries that remain which were built during the Bagan Dynasty founded by King Anawrahta in 1044 C.E. Our day of sightseeing will begin with a panoramic view from one of the many viewpoints or “mounds,” from which we will be able to appreciate the scale of Bagan as we see a multitude of temples stretched across the plain. (Our local expert will choose the best location according to the season). Please note that climbing the temples is prohibited. Then, we will be transferred to the Nyaung Oo Market to see a vast variety of fresh fruit and vegetables for sale and gain an insight into the bustling market atmosphere in Bagan. Continuing, we'll visit to the well-preserved Shwezigone Pagoda. Commenced by Anawrahta in the 12th century but completed by his son, King Kyansittha, it is a prototype for many later Myanmar pagodas. Its distinctive gilded zedi dominates the small town of Nyaung-U. This impressive pagoda contains 4 shrines at the cardinal points, each housing a 13-foot-high bronze standing Buddha, the largest surviving examples in Bagan. Our next stop will be the amazing Ananda Temple (via pony cart), which is one of the four main temples remaining in Bagan. Ananda temple is considered to be one of the most surviving masterpieces of the Mon architecture and is also known as the finest, largest, well-preserved and most revered of the Bagan temples.

Lunch: At a local restaurant.

Afternoon: Bagan is not only famous for the profusion of pagodas but also for its artistic handicrafts and local lacquer-ware store where the process of making each piece can be seen. After lunch, visit a local lacquer-ware workshop where the process of making each piece can be seen and observe the art of Bagan lacquer-ware being created. Finally, we'll visit Gubyaukgyi with its excellent stucco carvings. At the end of this culturally enlightening day, we will transfer to the Bagan airport for our flight back to Yangon. Upon arrival, we'll return transfer the ship. Snack boxes will be provided en route.

Activity note: Getting on/off motorcoach. Walking up to 1 mile total throughout the day; about 200 steps to St. Paul's Hill; approximately 5 steps at restaurant and when getting on/off river boat. Life jackets provided and required.

Breakfast: In the Terrace Café and on the Lido Deck in nice weather.

Morning: Leaving the pier, we'll drive through the countryside to Malacca and explore the town, from its red terracotta buildings and the oldest Protestant church in Malaysia (built circa 1753), all of which are products of the colonial Dutch presence. Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower in the center of the town square was built in 1886 by the affluent Baba family, but the "Stadthuys" - previously the residence of the Dutch governor - has a truly commanding presence. We will then climb up St. Paul's Hill to St. Paul’s Church, now a ruin, which was built by the Portuguese in 1521 and it was originally a Catholic church named Duarte Coelho. While here, we'll see the empty grave of St. Francis Xavier, which can be found in the center of the church amidst the large, Dutch, granite tombstones along the walls. We will then walk up to visit the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, one of the few temples where one can find 3 major doctrines of local Chinese belief under the same roof – Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.

Lunch: At a local restaurant.

Afternoon: After lunch, we will walk past the Heritage building on our way to board a river boat, from which we'll explore a different side of Malacca and admire some charming riverside houses, fine examples of traditional Malay architecture.

At Sea
B,D
Aegean Odyssey

Activity note: Getting on/off motorcoach. Walking throughout the day at field trip locations; mostly flat, paved terrain.

Breakfast: In the Terrace Café and on the Lido Deck in nice weather.

Morning: Setting out by motorcoach, we'll travel to Merlion Park to see the iconic Merlion statue that blends the head of a lion with the body of a fish. The body symbolizes Singapore's humble beginnings as a fishing village when it was called Temasek, meaning 'sea town' in Old Javanese. Its head represents Singapore’s original name, Singapura, or ‘lion city’ in Malay. We will then drive through Chinatown. In the heart of Chinatown, where the hand of conservation has generously turned old shop house facades into the brilliance of its glorious past, we'll admire the diversity and colors, observing age-old customs and architecture typical of a bygone era. We will then transfer to Little India where we will weave our way through the colorful streets and learn about the origins of flower garlands in the Indian community. Next, we will discover the neighboring Kampong Glam, also known by the name of its main thoroughfare, Arab Street. This is where Singapore's Arab traders settled in the founding days of the colony, and was also the part of town allocated to the Malays when Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of Singapore, drew up his town plan. We'll drive by the street soaking in the sight of all the types of exquisite antiques and goods one can find here. We will then continue travelling through the Civic District to see the Parliament House, City Hall, Victoria Theatre, the Empress Place Building, and other colonial structures, which have been restored to their original splendor.

Lunch: On your own to explore what you like.

Afternoon: After lunch, we will travel to Gardens by the Bay, the iconic new development and a horticultural oasis embraced within the heart of the city. The accompanying structures of the two cooled conservatories is an architectural wonder of its own; the Flower Dome replicates the dry Mediterranean climates found across the world, while the even more astounding Cloud Forest maintains a tropical montane climate, complete with a waterfall. Next, we'll marvel at the supertrees, a group of massive, solar-powered vertical gardens covered by a variety of over 162,900 plants including varieties of bromeliads, orchids, ferns, and tropical flowering climbers.

Dinner: Your choice of the Terrace Café or Marco Polo Restaurant.
