South Beach, Art Deco District, Wolfsonian
Miami
B
Hyatt Regency Miami

Activity note: Walking about 2 miles throughout the day; city sidewalks and uneven terrain.

Morning: To start the day, we'll hear from a local Art Deco expert at the hotel to learn more about this pervasive architectural and decorative style seen in Miami. Then, aboard our motorcoach, we’ll ride down South Beach and learn from our expert about the various booms and busts that have taken place in the area over the years. The first area of Miami to be developed, South Beach was, for instance, completely destroyed by the 1926 hurricane and has since been shaped by the overall growth of Miami. Having gained popularity in the interwar period, the style is notable for strong colors, geometric patterns, and over-the-top decorations. We’ll then go on an expert-led walking field trip focusing on the architecture of the world-famous Art Deco District. The first 20th century neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it contains some 800 historically significant structures. These vibrantly colored buildings represent an era when Miami Beach was heavily promoted and developed as a "tropical playground."

Lunch: On your own in South Beach.

Afternoon: After rendezvousing at a predetermined time and place, we’ll walk over to the Wolfsonian–Florida International University to view their impressive collection of pieces that illustrate the persuasive power of art and design.
