Activity note: Check in at the hotel is available from 2:00 p.m. The official start of the program is at 6:00 p.m. with orientation in the hotel meeting room.

Morning: Transfer to the hotel and enjoy the time to relax and freshen up.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Afternoon: After arriving at the hotel, check in and get your room, then take some time to unpack, freshen up, and relax. Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone with a warm welcome and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule and any changes, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer any questions you may have. The ship offers a variety of shore excursions. We have made special arrangements for activities ashore that are included in the price of your Road Scholar program. These excursions will be fully described in the pre-departure information packets sent from Road Scholar as well as by staff aboard ship. All transportation will be provided via motorcoach unless specified otherwise. During this program, our Group Leader will also serve as our Study Leader. Lectures and field trips will be led by our Group Leader or by local experts unless specified otherwise. Excursions will include walking up to 3 miles at an even pace on terrain including hilly and winding streets, cobblestone streets, sidewalks, and steps with/without railings. Free time is reserved for your personal independent exploration. Please note that program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. Each afternoon and evening, join your fellow participants in the ship’s restaurant for a plated, multi-course meal featuring fresh and local cuisine, plus coffee, tea, water, assorted juices, beer, wine, and water. The menu will be displayed ahead of time in the ship’s lobby, offering participant’s time to request an alternative course with your server. Breakfast features a plentiful buffet including breakfast meats, a variety of eggs, pastries and spreads, yogurt, cereal, and fruit, plus coffee, tea, assorted juices, and water.

Dinner: At the hotel, enjoy a plated welcome meal accompanied by a glass of wine for the adults, plus coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: At leisure.

Activity note: Walk up to 3 miles on a variety of terrain.

Breakfast: At the hotel, we will have a breakfast buffet, plus coffee, tea, water.

Morning: Set out on a panoramic field trip exploring Lisbon by land and by water aboard an amphibious vehicle featuring commentary from boat staff. Is it a bus? Is it a boat? It’s both! From the comfort of our seats, drive through the streets of Portugal’s capital and the water of the Tagus River. We then visit the Lisbon Story Center with our Group Leader and audio guides to learn the history of Portugal’s capital through interactive exhibits. From its founding to the present day, learn about the myths and legends, major city events and their protagonists, and how the city developed to its modern form.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Afternoon: Continue to Lisbon’s old city for a photo challenge, capturing memories of some of Portugal’s oldest streets and famous buildings with your grandchild. As we explore the city, work together with your grandchild to capture photos on cell phones or other personal cameras. The remainder of the afternoon is on your own to see and do what interests you most.

Dinner: At a local restaurant.

Evening: At leisure.

Activity note: Drive from Lisbon to Vila Nova de Gaia is approximately 3 hours. Embarkation begins at 5:00 p.m. All routes and excursions are subject to change – weather and sea conditions may affect the itinerary.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: Our day begins with an introduction to Portugal led by a local expert, focusing on its history and its people, in preparation for our sailing up the Douro River. We then check out of the hotel and board our motorcoach for the day, where our luggage will be kept until we arrive in Porto. We then depart for the National Tile Musuem, where an exciting scavenger hunt awaits us through a land of patterns and color. The museum highlights the Portuguese art of “azulejo” or decorative ceramic tiling that traces its origin to the Alhambra. As Italian artists used fresco to decorate empty spaces on buildings Portuguese artists embraced the art of azulejo. We’ll then ride to the Park of Nations.

Lunch: On your own to enjoy what you like in Lisbon’s Nations Park, more commonly known as Parque das Nacoes even by those who do not speak Portuguese. The site of the 1998 World Exposition, that park has grown to become Lisbon’s modern center located on the Targus River estuary.

Afternoon: Board the motorcoach and transfer north to Porto, where we will embark the ship. Upon our arrival, crew members will be waiting to assist with luggage and bring it to your room. Check in at the front desk and settle into your cabin before the presentation of the crew.

Dinner: Multi-course plated meal in the restaurant, plus coffee, tea, assorted juices, wine, beer, water.

Evening: At leisure. The ship will remain docked in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south shore of Douro River across from Porto.

Breakfast: Enjoy a plentiful buffet in the restaurant, plus coffee, tea, juices, water.

Morning: This morning is a time to discover the different sides of Porto, both the old and the new, with a local expert. Begin with a walking discovery of Porto’s historic center — the Ribeira — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where traditional plazas and small storefronts stand atop Roman Ruins. From the Ribeira, we will visit the historic railway station of São Bento. At the end of our field trip, we will return to the ship.

Lunch: Aboard the ship in the restaurant, we will have a multi-course plated meal, plus coffee, tea, wine, water.

Afternoon: We set sail this afternoon and make our way into the Douro River Valley towards Peso de Regua. As we make our way into one of the world’s most famous wine regions, our Group Leader will lead a presentation on the two languages and cultures of Spain and Portugal.

Dinner: Aboard ship.

Evening: At leisure.

Morning: This morning, we will drive to Vila Nova de Foz Côa and visit the Prehistoric Rock Art Site in the Côa Valley , located on the bank of the river Côa, tributary of the river Douro, documenting continuous human occupation from the end of the Paleolithic Age. Multiple panels with animal figures were carved over several millennia, representing the most remarkable open-air ensemble of Paleolithic art on the Iberian Peninsula.

Lunch: Aboard ship.

Afternoon: Drive back to the riverfront and board the cruise boat.

Dinner: Aboard ship.

Evening: At leisure.

Visit of Salamanca

Activity note: Drive is approximately two hours to Salamanca.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Transfer via motorcoach to Salamanca, where we will enjoy an exploration of the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site preserving Roman, Arabic, and Christian treasures. Experience Salamanca by little train to discover its main streets and many squares as a local expert provides commentary of the many sites we will pass. The remainder of the morning is at leisure to see and do what interests you most. Sit in the main square as many Spanish do, visit the local fresh food market, or explore one of the oldest universities in the world at the University of Salamanca.

Lunch: On your own to enjoy what you like or sample the local flavor.

Afternoon: Return to the ship in Barca d’Alva and being our return journey west to Porto.

Dinner: Aboard ship, enjoy the Captain’s Gala.

Evening: At leisure.

Morning: In the morning, drive to Régua and visit a wine producer and discover more about the plantation of vines.

Lunch: Picnic lunch provided by the boat.

Afternoon: Surprising activities will be waiting for us as we explore the interactive museum in Regua and learn about life in the rural world and its landscape. Later, we will board a coach to join the boat at Leverinho or Bitetos.

Dinner: Aboard ship.

Evening: At leisure. Prepare for disembarkation in the morning. Consult the Group Leader and pick up a ribbon from the front desk representing your departure time in the morning. Leave your luggage with the ribbon outside your cabin door for the ships crew to collect and bring to the main lobby.

Breakfast: Aboard ship.

Morning: Cruise to Porto and prepare for disembarkation. Consult the Group Leader and pick up a ribbon from the front desk representing your departure time. Leave your luggage with the ribbon outside your cabin door for the ship crew to collect and bring to the main lobby. We board the motorcoach and drive to the Museum of Transport in Porto where we find one of the most important collections of cars in the country: those that have been in the service of its presidents since the founding of the Portuguese Republic. Later, we will participate in a Film Workshop where the grandchildren and grandparents will be able to create a short film that represents the meeting between the two generations.

Lunch: At a private home, enjoy lunch with a local family.

Afternoon: After lunch, drive to the hotel where you will spend the two last nights before departure. Walk with your group leader in the neighborhood of the hotel where suggestions will be given for you free dinner and evening

Dinner: On your own to explore what you like. Your Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions or recommendations.

Activity note: Drive is approximately 40 miles one way.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: Our first stop this morning is the most beautiful bookshop in the city with our Group Leader explaining Livraria Lello’s significance and history. Livraria Lello was opened by two esteemed brothers who were actively involved in the affairs of the growing and bustling city. Passionate about literature and culture, the bookshop opened in 1906 and has remained relatively unchanged. Before returning to the hotel, you may be dropped off at the beachfront .

Lunch: On your own to enjoy what you like or sample the local fare.

Afternoon: Free Time. See and do what interests you most in this cultural and mercantile city.

Dinner: At the hotel or local restaurant, enjoy our farewell dinner and the last night with your fellow Road Scholars.

Evening: Join the Group Leader for a wrap-up session, reflecting on our adventure on the Douro River reaching all the way to Salamanca, Spain.
