Solstice Holidays: Hanukkah, Yule & Mountain Christmas

Activity note: The course begins this evening with a viewing of a holiday classic movie in preparation for the mornings discussion.

Afternoon: Registration In lobby of Lambuth Inn

Dinner: Enjoy dinner at the Lambuth Inn buffet with entree choices, vegetables, breads, desserts, & the bountiful salad bar. Coffee(regular & decaf,) tea & water are included.

Evening: Orientation and Reception. The Group Leader will greet you & lead a round of introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule & any changes, discuss roles & responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures & answer any questions you may have. Afterwards we view our first Holiday Classic Movie in preparation for a morning discussion. Hospitality Room is open throughout the week with snacks, puzzles, games and fellowship.

Activity note: We discuss the film viewed last night, then explore the solstice holidays observed through many cultures & time with a Power Point presentation.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in Hotel dining room

Morning: Our Movie man gives us insight into the makings, staging & meaning of the classic movie watched last night. After that discussion we learn about solstice traditions through time around the world through a Power Point presentation.

Lunch: Buffet lunch in Hotel dining room

Afternoon: Afternoon class is a colorful journey through space & time learning about Solstice traditions around the world via a Power Point presentation. Yule will be highlighted & its influence on modern Christmas celebrations will be discussed.

Dinner: Buffet dinner in hotel dining room

Evening: Enjoy a classic holiday film that will be discussed in class the following day.

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in hotel dining room

Morning: We discuss the classic holiday movie viewed last night with our Movie man. Afterwards we learn about plant & animal adaptation to survive Winter's harshness here in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. This discussion brings us to an understanding of greenery in ancient Yule traditions.

Lunch: Buffet lunch in hotel dining room

Afternoon: Free Time. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see & do what interests you most. Walk around the lake, stroll downtown Waynesville, or visit the World Methodist Museum.

Dinner: Dinner served buffet style in the hotel dining room.

Evening: The evening class is all about Hanukkah, what is the holiday's origin? Who celebrates it & how? Our resident expert, who refers to herself as the Hanukkah Elf, teaches about this tradition & its continuing importance.

Morning: Two course offerings - Christmas traditions from early 1900's to present day. Appalachian Christmas.

Lunch: Buffet lunch in hotel dining room

Afternoon: Following local custom we each make our own vine & greenery wreath. This hands-on activity lets you create a holiday symbol to take home & enjoy.

Dinner: Buffet dinner in hotel dining room.

Evening: View a classic holiday movie , both for your entertainment & the morning discussion

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast in hotel dining room

Morning: discuss the classic holiday film with our Movie man. The second class of the day is led by a regional artist/musician & her dulcimer. We learn the history of familiar carols & hear regional favorites.

Lunch: Lunch in the hotel dining room, served buffet style.

Afternoon: We make cornhusk angesl together. Our leader set her lap dulcimer aside & guides us through the pleasant craft of making simple cornhusk angels in teh best mountain tradition. You may hang them on your Christmas tree, tie them to the wreath you made yesterday, or use them as bookmarks.

Dinner: Buffet dinner in hotel dining room.

Evening: Enjoy our final classic holiday movie in preparation for the morning class.
