Activity note: Hotel Check-in available from 4:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone, review the program theme, the up-to-date daily schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Indicated times are approximate program activities and schedules may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. All transportation will be via a private vehicle unless specified otherwise. Thank you for your understanding. We have set aside some free time in the schedule for your personal independent exploration. The Group Leader will often be available during free time to accompany informal excursions, activities, or meals that have been excluded from the program cost. You are welcome to join if you like, with any associated costs on your own.

Dinner: At the Paso Robles Inn, enjoy a local farm to table plated dinner featuring a salad, entree, and dessert, plus water, coffee, iced tea, and a complimentary glass of sparkling wine; other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: Enjoy the remainder of the evening getting to know your fellow participants and discovering what you share beyond a love of lifelong learning. Settle in and get a good night's rest for the day ahead.

Organic Farm, Harbor Boat Tour, Wine & Appetizer Pairing

Activity note: Walking will include a floating dock with no handrails; Walking on uneven and potentially slippery ground with steep inclines.

Breakfast: In the Paso Robles Inn, a limited menu offers a choice of oatmeal with raisins, brown sugar, milk, walnuts, or cold cereal with toast, or two eggs, hash browns/country fried potatoes and toast, or two eggs with biscuit and gravy, or bagels and cream cheese with cup of fresh fruit, plus water, coffee, and tea; Other beverages are available for purchase.

Morning: Meet the group leader for a leisurely yet informative walk in downtown Paso. While the area is small in size, it is rich in history and a center for culinary delights. Your Group Leader will guide you pass many local eateries which may tempt your appetites for dinner on your free evening. Following the walk, we’ll board our bus at the Inn for a field trip to a family farm utilizing organic farming techniques. Hear from the farmer about the challenges and rewards these practices have on farmer and family.

Lunch: At the family farm featuring half a sandwich and fresh fruit, plus water and iced tea.

Afternoon: We’ll travel to Morro Bay where we’ll board a boat for a field trip to explore Morro Bay. On the boat ride through the estuary to the oyster farm area (which is underwater), our captain will give a brief history and close look at the many species of wildlife that call the estuary home. Upon our arrival at the oyster beds, hear an explanation on the unique 'Farming' process. Next, we'll return to land and meet Giovanni DeGarimore, the owner of Giovanni's Fish Market, who will talk about local sustainable fishing practices. He will invite you to a wine and oyster tasting at Stax where you'll learn how to prepare and taste oysters.

Dinner: After we return to the hotel, we will walk to a downtown bistro restaurant where we will meet with a local Paso Robles wine producer for a wine and appetizer pairing. Dinner will follow at the downtown bistro and will include a salad, entree, a dessert and water; other beverages available for purchase.

Wine Educator Presentation, Vineyard Field Trips

Activity note: Walking on uneven and potentially slippery ground with steep inclines. Eberle Winery event is only accessible by a flight of stairs and a ramp (no elevator).

Breakfast: In the hotel dining room.

Morning: In the hotel, a local wine maker will introduce the Paso Robles wine region and explain how wine is made. Following the lecture, we’ll travel to Steinbeck Vineyards. Meet one of Paso Robles' pioneer wine grape-growing families. During our vineyard visit, we’ll learn all the steps necessary to run a vineyard, including planting a vineyard, conservation efforts, and the challenges posed by nature. Our visit will conclude with a wine tasting. We’ll ride to Eberle Winery for a winery tour, tasting and lunch.

Lunch: Enjoy a lovely buffet lunch in the caves at Eberle Winery, including assorted sandwiches, salads, and dessert, plus water and a wine tasting.

Afternoon: After lunch, we’ll ride to Derby Wine Estates, a historical landmark in Paso Robles, for a tour and tasting. The actual building was erected in 1922 and was used as an almond farm, warehouse and processing plant. Following our visit, we’ll return to the hotel.

Dinner: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Morning: At the hotel, we’ll meet Danika Gordon who is a proprietor for Vivant Fine Cheese. Learn about cheese making and the different types of cheese including artisan and farmstead cheeses.

Lunch: At a local restaurant

Afternoon: After lunch, we'll travel to an olive farm and mill. The olive oil miller will explain how olive oil is produced and provide tastings of EVOO.

Dinner: Dinner at a local Paso Robles eatery within walking distance of the hotel.

Evening: At leisure.

Morning: Our final session at the hotel presents Katy Budge, local food writer and blogger, who will talk about trends in buying local and fresh. Learn how to adopt ways to enhance your lifestyle by supporting your local producers and merchants. Websites and books will be shared with a look at future food trends. This concludes the program.
