Breakfast: At leisure on board in the Crystal Dining Room (open seating) or the more casual Lido Café. Room Service is also available 24 hours a day.

Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: Although there are numerous spots on land that invite relaxation and exploration, the Turks and Caicos are really all about the water. More specifically, they're all about what's beneath the surface. These islands have some of the best diving and snorkeling anywhere, courtesy of one of the world's largest network of coral reefs, easily accessible off the islands' shores. One reef, aptly called the Wall, is particularly spectacular; it drops 7,000 feet straight down. Between the shore and the reef, the water is only waist deep, providing a perfect place for beginning snorkelers to get their feet wet.

Lunch: At leisure on board the ship in the Crystal Dining Room, the Lido Café, or the Trident Grill; or you may choose to eat independently ashore. Some Crystal shore excursions will include lunch (depending on the length).

Afternoon: Continue independent exploration of Grand Turks. The ship will depart at 5:00 p.m.

Crystal Serenity

Breakfast: At leisure on board in the Crystal Dining Room (open seating) or the more casual Lido Café. Room Service is also available 24 hours a day.

Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: A rich history exists in Santa Marta, Colombia, revealed in the massive, whitewashed cathedral, which is the country’s oldest, and in the founding of the city itself, which dates to 1525, making Santa Marta South America’s oldest city. A faded colonial heritage is being brightened with a refurbishment of the colonial district, while Simon Bolivar’s revered status as Latin America’s hero of independence is forever enshrined at the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, the hacienda where he spent his last days. You will want to spend every moment you can discovering the city’s historical sites and beautiful location. The fashionable beach resort of El Rodadero beckons from the south. From the north, the fishing village of Taganga invites a visit. Farther up the coast, the protected coastline of Parque Nacional Tayrona summons trekkers and nature lovers to marvel at views of the world’s tallest coastal mountain range and glimpse the area’s wildlife.

Breakfast: At leisure on board in the Crystal Dining Room (open seating) or the more casual Lido Café. Room Service is also available 24 hours a day.

Morning: EXCLUSIVE ROAD SCHOLAR EXCURSION: The day starts with a short panoramic drive from the port by private motor coach to La Popa Monastery previously known as the "stern of a galleon". This ancient Monastery located at the top of a hill can be seen from any point in Cartagena and in turn, it offers a privileged view of this incredible city. It was built at the beginning of the 17th century as a humble wooden chapel, but later replaced by a more solid construction that was fortified two centuries later. It is still inhabited by monks and was used several times as a military fortress due to its strategic location. A chapel dedicated to the Virgin de La Candelaria, patron saint of Cartagena and a colonial museum can also be visited. Enjoy the flower filled patio and the views that stretch all over the city and wander through the cool patio and interior of the convent. Then continue to San Felipe de Barajas Fortress for a photo stop and continue on for a guided walk through the magical walled city. Here, the Spanish colonial architecture is some of the most impressive and best preserved in South America. You will then continue on to the Palace of the Inquisition. The aim of the Inquisition was to judge crimes against the Catholic faith and this building is the most important example of civilian architecture in 18th century Cartagena. The return drive to the port will pass through the residential neighborhood of La Manga which is noted for it's hodgepodge of architectural styles many from the late 19th and early 20th century. One of the more interesting influences is Islamic, brought by the many immigrants to northern Colombia from Middle East countries such as Lebanon and Syria.

Lunch: At leisure on board the ship in the Crystal Dining Room, the Lido Café, or the Trident Grill; or you may choose to eat independently ashore (today's field trip does not include lunch, but will return to the ship in time to eat on board)

Afternoon: The afternoon is free relax on board the ship as it sails from Cartagena at 4:00 p.m.

Dinner: Join your study leader for a group dinner in the Crystal Dining Room.

Evening: At leisure to enjoy the ship's activities.

Colon, Panama

B,L,D
Crystal Serenity

Breakfast: At leisure on board in the Crystal Dining Room (open seating) or the more casual Lido Café. Room Service is also available 24 hours a day.

Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: The history of Colón is punctuated by busy years of construction to facilitate travel. First were the Panama Railroad and the carving out of a quick route for the California Gold Rush. Then, most enduringly and famously, came the Panama Canal, begun by the French in 1881 and completed by the Americans in 1914. In recent years, Colón has been energized by two more commercial endeavors: the Zona Libre, or Free Zone, established in 1948 and still the largest free-trade zone in the Americas, and Colon 2000, the multi-million-dollar cruise-ship port that welcomes visitors with shopping and dining amenities. Just six miles south of Colón are the impressive Gatún Locks and Gatún Dam, where ships enter and exit the Panama Canal on the Caribbean side. Nature's wonders include what is perhaps the Caribbean’s best-known and most appreciated attribute: turquoise waters that offer outstanding diving and snorkeling.

Lunch: At leisure on board the ship in the Crystal Dining Room, the Lido Café, or the Trident Grill; or you may choose to eat independently ashore. Some Crystal shore excursions will include lunch (depending on the length).

Afternoon: Independent exploration continues.

Crystal Serenity

Activity note: Transiting the Panama Canal is a unique experience shared with the entire ship. Spend the day on deck, watching the ship transit through the locks. Ship board lecturers will teach you about the history and politics behind this engineering marvel.

Breakfast: Your ship sets sail at 5:00 a.m. Breakfast at leisure on board in the Crystal Dining Room (open seating) or the more casual Lido Café. Room Service is also available 24 hours a day.

Morning: Spend an unforgettable day cruising the Panama Canal, a 51-mile waterway through the rainforest that is one of the world's engineering masterpieces. The ship glides down the canal with inches to spare, through locks that raise and lower it like a toy. Along the way it crosses enormous Gatun Lake, and the amazing Gaillard Cut, blasted out of a solid mountainside. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the canal had an enormous impact on shipping between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, replacing the long and treacherous route via the Drake Passage and Cape Horn at the southernmost tip of South America. A ship sailing from New York to San Francisco via the canal travels 5,900 miles, well under half the 14,000 mile route around Cape Horn. The concept of a canal near Panama dates to the early 16th century. The first attempt to construct a canal began in 1880 under French leadership, but was abandoned after 21,900 workers died, largely from disease (particularly malaria and yellow fever) and landslides. The United States launched a second effort, incurring a further 5,600 deaths but succeeding in opening the canal in 1914.

Lunch: Lunch at leisure on board the ship in the Crystal Dining Room, the Lido Café, or the Trident Grill.

Afternoon: Transiting the Panama Canal is a unique experience shared with the entire ship. Spend the day on deck, watching the ship transit through the locks the enormous "Panamax" ships. Ship board lecturers will teach you about the history and politics behind this engineering marvel.

Morning: INDEPENDENT EXPLORATION: Once a sleepy fishing village, San Juan de Sur has been energized by the discovery of its charming, crescent-shaped bay, excellent surfing and fishing, and authentic, laid-back culture. Visitors certainly appreciate this slice of Pacific Coast paradise, strolling along golden-sand beaches and streets lined with wooden buildings painted in vibrant colors. What continues to make San Juan del Sur special is that it still retains its quiet side, with the town belonging mostly to the locals during the week and morning wake-up calls still being provided by the neighborhood rooster. Hammocks and sunsets are the way of life in San Juan del Sur, where the hilltop statue of Christ of the Mercy gazes upon the bay, like Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, but on a much smaller scale.
