Activity note: Hotel check-in from 3:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table in the hallway by the meeting room to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures including contact numbers for key staff, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Indicated times are approximate. Program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. We have set aside some free time in the schedule for your personal independent exploration. The Group Leader will often be available during free time to accompany informal excursions, activities, or meals that have been excluded from the program cost. You are welcome to join if you like, with any associated costs on your own. Because our programs are planned far in advance, game schedules were not available at the time of publication. It will be published on our website as soon as announced and will be included in preparatory materials sent following enrollment. All transportation will be provided by bus and all lectures will take place in our private meeting room in the hotel.

Dinner: In the hotel restaurant, we will enjoy a tasty and nutritious catered meal with a salad and two side dishes, dessert and your choice of coffee (regular or decaf) or tea (iced or hot).

Evening: Spend time becoming better acquainted with participants and program staff. The rest of the evening is yours to continue making new friends or just to relax and prepare for the full day of activity ahead.

Breakfast: In the hotel, the breakfast buffet includes a variety of choices such as eggs, sausage, yogurt, oatmeal, biscuits, muffins, waffles, and cereal, plus assorted juices, coffee, tea, water.

Morning: In our private meeting room at the hotel we will be joined by Rich Westcott, longtime writer and author for the Philadelphia Phillies, who will share his experience. An annual tradition, spring training typically lasts for six weeks from mid February to just before Opening Day in early April. This series of practices and exhibition games give fans a sneak peek into the season while drawing them to the warmer locations where training occurs. We will transfer to the stadium via bus.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like in at the stadium.

Afternoon: GAME 1: TBA. Apply your new knowledge from morning lecture as you watch a baseball game. Sometimes we split the group up, based on the fan survey form that will be mailed to you within two weeks of enrollments. Following the game, we will return to the hotel.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Evening: Enjoy a baseball presentation on the Pittsburgh Pirates by minor league players.

Morning: Join us for a baseball expert presentation. We will then take a short break. We will begin our second baseball presentation of the morning.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like in at the stadium.

Afternoon: GAME 2: TBA.

Dinner: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions. A bus will take those who wish to a Lakewood Ranch area restaurant.

Evening: Evening activity.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: A retired baseball scout will share his wealth of experiences over the years. This is your opportunity to ask questions you have always wanted to ask? One more presentation before transferring to the baseball stadium for the afternoon game.

Lunch: On your own at the stadium or at nearby restaurant, it all depends on spring training schedule?

Afternoon: Possible game 3 this afternoon or tomorrow depending on schedule. If there is not a game, there may be a lecture or DVD, all depending on MLB spring training schedule?

Dinner: Enjoy dinner at the evening game in Sarasota.

Evening: GAME 4: TBA.

Morning: From the hotel, we will take a field trip to Pirate City to watch a spring training session. Or a morning presentation?

Lunch: On your own to enjoy what you like at the stadium or a nearby restaurant.

Afternoon: GAME 4: Attend our fourth spring training game @ TBA.

Dinner: At the hotel.

Evening: Play baseball trivia conducted by the Group Leader and put your new knowledge to the test.

Morning: Join us as you are introduced to the history of the Negro League. Before Jackie Robinson played professional baseball, black athletes played in their own, separate leagues. From the early 1880’s, there were more than 200 all-black teams spread throughout the country. At its peak in the 1920’s, three separate negro leagues were established in the Northeast, the Southeast, and the Midwest. This concludes our program.
