Activity note: Hotel check-in from 3:00 p.m. All activities are at the hotel today.

Afternoon: Program Registration: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table in the hallway by the meeting room to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. Orientation: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the program theme, the up-to-date Daily Schedule and any changes, discuss safety guidelines, emergency procedures including contact numbers for key staff, roles and responsibilities, and answer any questions you may have. Indicated times are approximate. Program activities, schedules, and personnel may need to change due to local circumstances. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. We have set aside some free time in the schedule for your personal independent exploration. The Group Leader will often be available during free time to accompany informal excursions, activities, or meals that have been excluded from the program cost. You are welcome to join if you like, with any associated costs on your own. All lectures will take place in our private meeting room at the hotel and will be led by our opera maven unless specified otherwise. All transportation during this program will be via bus unless specified otherwise.

Dinner: In the hotel restaurant, we will enjoy a tasty and nutritious catered meal with a salad and two side dishes, dessert and your choice of coffee (regular or decaf) or tea (iced or hot).

Evening: Spend time becoming better acquainted with participants and program staff. Find out what you have in common beyond a love of learning! The rest of the evening is yours to continue making new friends or just to relax and prepare for the full day of activity ahead.

"Manon Lescaut," Opera House Visit

Activity note: Walk behind the scenes involves walking at a moderate pace inside the opera house. There are elevators when we visit the costume shop on the second floor. Participants walk to the restaurant of their choice for lunch, many within one block of the opera house. Bus will drop off and pick up within one block of the opera house.

Breakfast: At the hotel, enjoy a meal including assorted cereals, oatmeal, breads, pastries, bagels, yogurt, and fresh fruit, plus coffee (regular/decaf), tea (hot/iced), water, and assorted fruit juice.

Morning: In our private meeting room, our opera maven will review and offer and introduction to "Manon Lescaut." Afterwards, our bus will depart for the Sarasota Opera House where we will go behind-the-scenes of the Sarasota Opera House with a local opera house staff expert for a back-stage look at the workings of the theatre, including the costume shop.

Lunch: Walking from the Opera House, this is meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like in downtown Sarasota. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Afternoon: Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions and give directions.

Dinner: Dinner starts at 5:30pm

Evening: Returning to the theater, enjoy a 7:30pm performance of "Manon Lescaut" by Giacomo Puccini. Love at first sight strikes the Chevalier Des Grieux and the enchanting Manon Lescaut. They flee to Paris, but when Des Grieux’s money runs out, Manon leaves him for a wealthy man. Yet despite the jewels and parties, Manon’s love for Des Grieux is inextinguishable and will burn them in ways they do not foresee.

Breakfast: At the hotel.

Morning: We will be introduced to the Opera and its different voices. A unique form of theater, different voices represent character traits and roles. We will reconvene for a talkback on "Manon Lescaut," which was seen the previous evening.

Lunch: At the hotel.

Afternoon: Enjoy a matinee performace of "Carmen" by Georges Bizet. All-consuming, ill-fated passion rules the tumultuous love of a gypsy and a corporal. Carmen will take you on a journey through Seville, to the mountains with the smugglers, and finally to the bullring, where Carmen and Don José’s story comes to its tragic end. Hear some of the most recognizable music in opera, like the “Habanera” and the “Seguidilla,” and feel the excitement of the famous “Toreador Song.”

Dinner: At the hotel at 5:30pm

Evening: We will return to the theater for a 7:30pm performance of "Norma" by Vincenzo Bellini. In Roman-occupied Gaul, a Druid priestess and a Roman official— Norma and Pollione—have fallen in love. Defying her sacred vows, Norma has borne two children, but Pollione’s sights are now set on Adalgisa, a temple virgin. The scorned Norma contemplates murder, but as her heart battles between love and duty, she chooses to be cleansed by the flames of a sacrificial pyre. Return to the hotel via bus.

Morning: Talkback on "Carmen" and "Norma." Returning to the meeting room, we will preview and be introduced to “Tiefland.”

Lunch: At the hotel.

Afternoon: Enjoy a 1:30pm performance of "Tiefland" by Eugen d"Albert. Marta is the unwilling mistress of a wealthy landowner, Sebastiano. To keep the poor girl near him while he takes a wealthy wife, Sebastiano marries Marta off to the shepherd, Pedro. Unaware of her past, Pedro falls in love with her. When Marta’s awful secret comes to light, Pedro does whatever it takes to free his beloved from her misery. This passionate example of early 20th century verismo opera is seen regularly in Germany and Austria, but there has been only one other U.S. production in a century.

Dinner: After the performance, this meal is on your own in charming downtown Sarasota.

Evening: Return to the hotel via bus. Enjoy an opera DVD selected by our opera maven.
