Amigo Centre

On a quiet blacktop road just outside the Amigo Centre in southern Michigan, a long-bearded Amish man steers a horse-drawn buggy. The clip-clop of hooves soon grows faint in the patchwork-quilt countryside. In the middle of Amish country, the faith-based Amigo Centre has been a beacon of renewal and education to Road Scholars since 1990. Two lakes, 400 acres, walking trails through timber and marsh, the sighting of deer and blue herons — this is a natural oasis for learning. Of equal educational merit is a visit to an Amish farm, a look into the lives of the “plain people” and the understanding that holding firm to one’s beliefs — centuries old or born today — is something to cherish.

Set in lush, rolling country amid 400 acres of natural beauty, the faith-based Amigo Centre retreat features hotel-style rooms, most having one double bed and two twins. Each room is air-conditioned and has its own bathroom. Two large meetings rooms in the center have a fireplace, refrigerator and microwave. The Retreat’s food is home-cooked and there’s plenty of it.

The peaceful setting includes two lakes — Perrin and Chapin — with a swimming area and beach, hiking trails and fishing. Road Scholars have access to canoes and the beauty of the wildlife. There is excellent bird watching and an on-site nature center. There are ample outdoor settings for Road Scholar to relax amid this natural jewel, with their choice to be invigorated by solitude or fellowship. There is also a gymnasium complete with a basketball court, plus a space for ping-pong and air hockey. Board games, puzzles and card games are also available.
