Examine the challenges facing U.S. diplomacy and the functions of embassies and consulates during this fascinating program designed in collaboration with the American Foreign Service Association. Investigate case studies and take part in expert-led discussions with retired diplomats. Spend the week with ambassadors and foreign service officers and their spouses in a wonderfully informal and friendly, yet very educational atmosphere. And take part in fascinating lectures, followed by Q & A sessions, as speakers share their wealth of expertise and experience on the world of foreign policy.

Molly Williamson, a retired Foreign Service officer who served six U.S. presidents, was the Senior Foreign Policy Advisor to the Secretary of Energy and interim ambassador to Bahrain. She was also Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce responsible for the Middle East, South Asia, Oceania, and Africa, and served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense responsible for the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. Molly is a board member of the American Foreign Service Association and American Academy of Diplomacy.

Suzanne Aldrich is a year-round resident of the Chautauqua area. An affable and skilled group leader, she is a board member of the Chautauqua Bird Tree & Garden Club. Suzanne has been an executive in the Girl Scouts organization and served in the Peace Corps in the Philippines and Germany.

Phil Shull View biography
Phil Shull retired in 2016 after 31 years with the Foreign Agricultural Service. His interest in food security and international relations was sparked as a boy living in India where he saw severe malnutrition. Philip worked towards maximizing exports of U.S. food and agricultural products and promoting global food security through trade negotiations, capacity building, food safety, biotechnology, marketing and promotion, scientific exchange, and economic analysis. His overseas assignments included Korea, Argentina (including Uruguay and Paraguay), Hong Kong, Philippines, and three postings to China.

Ambassador James Zumwalt is Chairman of the Japan America Society of Washington DC and a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA. With the State Department, he served as U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Senegal and the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. While Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of East Asia Affairs, he was responsible for Japan and Korea policy. He coordinated U.S. support for the Japanese government’s response to the crisis when the earthquake and tsunami struck Japan in 2011.
