At a Glance

Among the most fascinating stories of art history are those involving artistic pairings, some of which have led to intense rivalries even while spawning outrageously good art. This Artist Appreciation Month series unpacks some of the most intriguing of those pairings spanning a century of modern art from 1850 – 1950. How did Monet and Pissarro develop and steer Impressionism? Where did van Gogh and Gaugin’s lives and careers overlap? How did O’Keeffe and Stieglitz change the course of American modernist art? And what was the psychological impact of Pollock and Rothko? Join art history lecturer Matt Palczynski through the twists and turns of this in-depth art journey. Part three of this four-part series focuses on the apex of Early American Modernism, with Georgia O’Keeffe at its center, and Alfred Stieglitz — a pioneering gallerist and innovative photographer. Their wedding in December 1924 enhanced those two fates, symbolically cementing the careers of two brilliant artists. Investigate how they met, fell in love and left a profound pair of legacies on American art.
