Discussion Board FAQs

The Road Scholar Discussion Boards are where you can ask questions, meet your fellow Road Scholars and get advice from seasoned participants. We’ve created this help center to answer some of the common questions people have about using our discussion boards. Still having problems? Give us a call and we can help!

Forum: A ‘Forum’ is a general category of discussions. For example, we have ‘Forums’ on ‘Solo Travel,’ ‘Money Matters,’ ‘France,’ ‘California’ and many more topics and places.

Post: A ‘Post’ is a specific discussion within a ‘Forum.’ For example ‘Any tips for hiking at high altitude?‘ is a Post under the ‘Health & Special Considerations’ Forum.

Reply: A ‘Reply’ is a response to someone else’s Post.

View: A ‘View’ is when someone has read the Post. The number of ‘Views’ a post has is the number of people who have viewed it.

Types of Discussion Boards

We offer three types of Discussion Boards through the Road Scholar website.

Public General Discussion Boards

The first is the collection of Discussion Boards accessible through the ‘Community’ section of our website. These Discussion Boards are for general discussions about Road Scholar policies, destinations and topics like solo travel and health.

Public Program Discussion Boards

The second type of Discussion Board is the kind found on every program on the Road Scholar website. You can get to these Discussions Boards by clicking on the ‘Discuss’ tab on every program. These Discussion Boards are for conversations about that program specifically.

Private Group Discussion Boards

Once you enroll in a Road Scholar program, you are invited to join a private discussion board just for the participants in your group. You can access this Discussion Board through the ‘Upcoming Trips’ section of your Road Scholar online account.

Discussions

How do I start a discussion?

If you would like to start a discussion, follow these steps. In this example, you are creating a post about: “What is the best time of year to travel to France?”

  1. Log in to your Road Scholar account.
  2. On our Discussion Board main page (found through the ‘Community’ section of our website), click on the ‘International’ tab on the top of your screen.
  3. On the International page, click the ‘France’ Forum.
  4. Once you are in the France Forum, click on the blue ‘New’ button on the top right of your screen.
  5. This opens a blank form for you to fill in.
  6. In the Subject field enter “What is the best time of year to travel to France?”
  7. In the Description field, you can expand on your question or just repeat your question.
  8. When you are ready to publish your post, click the blue ‘Post’ button at the bottom of the page.
  9. If you want to be notified when someone responds to you post, keep the 'Notify me' box checked. If not, you can uncheck the box.

How do I join a discussion already in progress?

To reply to a Discussion Board post that someone has already started, simply click the blue ‘Reply’ button on that post. Then type your message in the box and click the blue ‘Reply’ button when you are ready to post your message. You can reply to an original post or to someone else’s reply. You will need to be logged in to your Road Scholar account to post a reply.

How do I find a post I started or replied to?

To find a discussion you started or joined, log in to your Road Scholar online account and go to any Discussion Board. Once you are on a Discussion Board, at the very top of the page on the right, click on your profile avatar. The avatar will either be your profile photo if you added one or a circle silhouette of a person if you did not add a profile photo. Once you click on your profile avatar, select the ‘Profile’ option from the menu. From here, you can see all your posts and replies under your ‘Recent Activity.’

Notifications

How do I stop or modify the automatic email notifications from the discussion boards?

To turn off or modify the email notifications you receive from our Discussion Boards, log in to your Road Scholar online account and go to any Discussion Board. Once you are on a Discussion Board, at the very top of the page on the right, click on your profile avatar. The avatar will either be your profile photo if you added one or a circle silhouette of a person if you did not add a profile photo. Once you click on your profile avatar, select ‘Settings’ from the menu. Directly under ‘Settings’ is a menu with three options going across the top of the page. Select the option on the right called ‘Notifications.’ Once you are on the ‘Notifications’ page, the first two options on the page are ‘Activity from subscriptions.’ Here you can uncheck the boxes to stop email notifications from replies added to posts and forums you’re subscribed to.

How do I set up discussion board preferences?

You are automatically subscribed to any board or forum that you post on, “like” a post on, or post a response to. You can turn on or off reply notifications on any board within the board itself where it says “Turn reply notifications on.” You can also manage which boards you get notifications from within your discussion board account by visiting your settings and selecting the “Subscriptions” tab in the middle and removing and saving any subscriptions you no longer want to receive notifications for.

User Profiles

What is a ‘profile’? How do I find it?

Your Discussion Board profile is the place where you can add or change your profile photo, find any posts or replies you’ve made and see any Discussion Board friends you have connected with. To get to your profile, log in to your Road Scholar account and go to any Discussion Board. Once you are on a Discussion Board, at the very top of the page on the right, click on the profile avatar. It will either be your profile photo if you created one or a circle silhouette of a person if you did not add a profile photo. Once you click on your profile avatar, select the ‘Profile’ option from the menu to visit your profile.

How do I add or change my profile avatar (photo)?

To add or change your profile avatar (the circular photo that represents your Road Scholar account), log in to your Road Scholar account and go to any Discussion Board. Once you are on a Discussion Board, at the very top of the page on the right, click on the profile avatar. It will either be your profile photo if you created one or a circle silhouette of a person if you did not add a profile photo. Once you click on your profile avatar, select the ‘Profile’ option from the menu and then click the ‘Edit Profile’ button on the right. From here, click the ‘Change’ black bar over your avatar on the left of the page. A new box will open. Click the ‘Browse’ button in the box and select the photo from your computer or phone. Once you have selected the image, select the ‘Upload and Use Image’ button.

How do I change my profile name?

When you first create your Road Scholar account, we automatically assign you a name for your discussion board profile. To create a custom name for your profile, log in to your Road Scholar online account and go to any Discussion Board. Once you are on a Discussion Board, at the very top of the page on the right, click on your profile avatar. The avatar will either be your profile photo if you added one or a circle silhouette of a person if you did not add a profile photo. Once you click on your profile avatar, select ‘Profile’ from the menu, then click the ‘Edit Profile’ button on the right. This will open a text box on the top of your page that has the name of your profile inside. Click inside the text box and you can change the name of your profile. When complete, click the ‘Save Profile’ button on the right.

How do I upload a photo?

If you would like to add a photo to a post, log in to your Road Scholar account and click on the blue ‘New’ button on the top right of your screen in the forum or discussion thread you want to post to. This opens a blank form for you to fill in for you post. In the tool bar above the ‘Description’ box, there is an ‘Insert’ option. Click that and select ‘Insert image/video/file.’ This will open another window. In the ‘From’ field in the top of the window, select the ‘File Upload’ option. Then click the ‘Browse’ button to search for the file of the photo on your computer. Once you have selected the image you want to upload, click the ‘OK’ button to add it your post. When you are ready to post, click the blue ‘Post’ button at the bottom.

How do I log into my Road Scholar account?

To log in to your Road Scholar account, click on the ‘Sign in’ arrow on the top of the Road Scholar homepage, then click the blue ‘Sign In’ button. On the next screen, enter the email address you use for your Road Scholar account and your password. Then click the ‘Sign In’ button to be logged in to your account. If you don’t have a Road Scholar account, you’ll need one to participate in our discussion boards. To create an account, follow the same steps above, but instead of entering your email address and password on the log-in screen, click the white ‘Create an Account’ button on the bottom, then follow the steps to create your account.

Friends

What does it mean to have ‘Friends’ through the Discussion Board?

If you have made a ‘Friend’ through the discussion board, you can send a message directly to that person, similar to sending an email. You can see your list of friends by visiting the ‘Profile’ section of your discussion board account.

How do I accept someone’s request to be my friend?

Once you are logged into your Road Scholar account on the discussion board, click your ‘Notifications’ icon, which is the lightning bolt-shaped symbol on the top right of your screen by your profile picture. When you click the ‘Notifications’ symbol, a list of your friendships requests will appear. Click ‘Accept’ to accept the friendship.

How do I send a private message to a friend?

To send a message to a friend, once you are logged into your Road Scholar account on the discussion board, click your ‘Messaging’ icon, which is the thought bubble-shaped symbol on the top right of your screen by your profile picture. Then click the ‘New Message’ button. This will open up a message box, like an email. Fill in the recipient name with the profile name of the person you want to contact. Write a subject line and message in the appropriate boxes, then click the ‘Send message’ blue button to send the message.

How do I add or remove friends?

To add a friend, visit any post that person has participated in and hover your mouse over their name. A menu will appear and one of the options on the menu is ‘Request friendship.’ Click on that button and we’ll send a notification to that person to confirm the friendship. Once they have confirmed the friendship, you are officially ‘Friends’ and can communicate directly with them through private messages!
