See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
If you’re looking for a more flexible schedule with ample independent time and several meals on your own, then our FLEX learning adventures are made for you.
Henri Matisse once said, “The Barnes Foundation is the only sane place to see art in America.” Established by scientist, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Albert C. Barnes in 1922, this legendary collection includes one of the world’s largest and finest groups of post-Impressionist and early modern paintings as well as other works of art -- all meticulously arranged by Dr. Barnes himself according to complex aesthetic principles. With privileged, exclusive access for Road Scholar participants, learn new ways of seeing and thinking about art as you debate and exchange ideas under the leadership of expert instructors. Founded as an educational art institution, the Barnes Foundation offers a progressive approach to learning in which an inquiry-based method encourages students to develop their visual and analytical skills under the direction of dedicated instructors. This is your chance to become a student of this revered institution with ample time to examine its collection of more than 2,500 objects, primarily the works of Impressionist and Modernist masters. The program price also includes a one-year membership to the Barnes Foundation for each participant, plus on some dates, privileged access to the Barnes when it is closed to the public.

• Engage in the educational tradition of the Barnes Foundation on a program of discovery focusing on four giants of modern art: Cezanne, Renoir, Matisse and Picasso.
• Take in special exhibits in the Philadelphia art world that vary with the date of your program, including Cezanne works from other museums and an exhibit on William Glackens, Dr. Barnes’ lifelong friend who helped start his collection.
• Enjoy a one-year membership to the Barnes Foundation – free – as part of your program price.

Program Notes

This program will be offered for the most part in the off season; the weather should not be a major consideration as you will be inside a building most of the time taking classes. But keep in mind that transportation will be provided on a public bus, so you can dress accordingly. The commuter rate for this program does not include breakfast.

Activity Notes

Walking at a slow pace for several hours inside galleries; public transportation used throughout program.
