Social and banquet, followed by get acquainted meeting and orientation

Dinner: Social and dinner at 5:50 followed by an orientation and get-acquainted meeting at 7:30 PM. Then discussion of the hikes on the next. On each subsequent day (Tuesday through Friday) there will be evening lectures: botany, forestry, geology, birds of the region.

Hiking at Craters of the Moon. Lecture on local area on bus; lecture on geology in the evening.

Breakfast: Breakfast at 8:00 AM.

Morning: Board bus for hiking locations at 8:45 AM, taking lunches and water provided. Travel by bus for 85 miles on Hwy 93 for 1 hr 45 min through irrigated land, desert, and then along the Goodale Cut-Off on the Oregon Trail between the mountains and the lava. Lecture on the geology of the Snake River Plain while traveling. Choice of two hikes at Craters of the Moon. All will hike the short North Crater Flow Trail and the Indian Cave Trail, but in between those two there is the choice of the North Crater Trail (600 feet elevation gain) or the Two Mould Trail (both about 3 miles). Lecture on bus about the agriculture of South Central Idaho.

Lunch: Makings for lunches are provided: bread, condiments, fruit, granola, meat, cheese. Participants make and pack their own lunches and fill their water bottles for the hike.

Afternoon: Hikes continue.

Dinner: 6:00 PM Dinner

Evening: Lecture on geology of the Snake River Plain. Discussion of next day's hikes in the Sun Valley area.

Hiking in Sun Valley Area. Lecture on birds of Idaho.

Breakfast: Breakfast at 8:00 AM.

Morning: Board bus at 8:45 AM, taking our lunches and water. Travdel on Hwy 75 miles (1 hr 45 min) through farmland and desert toward the Sawtooth Mountains to the north. On bus talk about Idaho history and Sun Valley. Choice of hikes in Sun Valley area. Proctor Mountain (starts and ends at the Hemingway Memorial; 6 miles, about 1800 feet elevation gain), or hike along Wood River Trail with optional continuation through Ketchum to Sun Valley Lodge and Hemingway Memorial--those who want can stop in Ketchum after about 3 miles (total about 7 miles; slight elevation gain). During bus ride lecture on Idaho history and culture and the history of the Sun Valley area.

Lunch: Makings for lunches are provided: bread, condiments, fruit, granola, meat, cheese. Participants make and pack their own for the hike.

Afternoon: Continue hikes in Sun Valley area.

Dinner: Dinner

Evening: Lecture on birds of Idaho by Bart Butterfield, Idaho Fish and Game.

Hike in the South Hills between Twin Falls and the Nevada line. Through a wooded area on national forest land.

Breakfast: Breakfast at 8 AM.

Morning: Leave at 8:45 for City of Rocks: via I-84 East and Idaho Hwy 27. (2 hrs, 100 miles), talk on Idaho Demongraphics and politics. There are three options. All three hikes begin at Tea Kettle and end at Elephant Rocks. Options 1 and 2 end with a fairly demanding uphill slog. Option 1: Upper North Fork Circle Creek Trail Distance: 5 miles Elevation gain: about 1000 feet Highest point: 7400 feet. Option 2: Lower North Fork Circle Creek Trail. Much of this is hike is through forest, and there is a good deal of fairly steep up and down walking on uneven ground. Distance about 3 miles depending on route; it seems longer. Elevation gain: Overall, downhill, but many ups and downs. Option 3 (if anyone is interested): Tea Kettle: An easy, mostly downhill hike which stays south of the main road. It first goes south then turns abruptly east. 2.5 miles. Lecture on bus about Idaho geography and culture

Lunch: Eat lunch on the trail.

Afternoon: Continue hikes at City of Rocks.

Dinner: Dinner

Evening: Lecture on wildflowers by Dr. Dennis Pettygrove, College of Southern Idaho (emeritus).. Introduction of hikes at City of Rocks.

Hiking in Chocolate Gulch; lecture on Idaho trees and forests.

Breakfast: Breakfast at 8 AM.

Morning: Depart 8;45 via Idaho 75 (2 hours, 85 miles). On bus, talk about Idaho agriculture. Three different hikes are possible at Chocolate Gulch, which located a few miles north of Sun Valley/Ketchum. . Two of them go about four miles with an elevation gain of 680 feet. Near the end, one branch is flat, the other climbs some before rejoining the other trails. The third option is shorter (3 miles). All three options have the same elevation gain.

Afternoon: Hikes at Chocolate Gulch continue.

Dinner: Dinner

Evening: Lecture on forests and trees by Dr. Anita Koehn, US Department of Agriculture. Introduction to hikes in Greenhorn Gulch and Silver Creek Reserve (Sun Valley area)

Hikes in South Hills; Shoshone Falls; closing banquet.

Morning: Board bus at 8:45 for Oregon Trail hiking trail at Hagerman Fossil beds (25 miles on I-84 W, 35 minutes). On bus lecture on Oregon Trail through Idaho. Hike next to Oregon Trail for three miles (600 feet elevation gain on loss depending on direction). Observe wagon ruts.

Lunch: Lunch

Afternoon: Travel about 30 minutes to hike along the Snake River and visit Shoshone Falls. Return to monastery (20 miles, 25 minutes).

Dinner: Social and dinner at 5:50 PM.

Evening: Possibly a sing-along if the group would like that.
