This trip provided a perfect "taste of Costa Rica". I would highly recommend it to anyone who has never visited Costa Rica before.

To see the real Costa Rica with its natural sides and cultural background, and see how the nature and human can really co-exist; eco-tourism at its best. Also, fans of Jurrasic Park/World, you need to come here!

This programme provided a wonderful insight into the history, culture, natural beauty and ecosystems of Costa Rica. Rainforests, cloud forests, coffee plantations, sugarcane farms, bird watching, butterfly gardens, boat trips, whitewater rafting - all combined to make this an extremely enriching experience. I never liked pineapple until I joined this tour !

For those of you who like jungle and forest, exotic plants and animals, this program is for you. For it's size, Costa Rica has more kinds of plants, birds, and other animals than any other country in the world.

The Taste of Costa Rica tour was just right for a 1 week introduction of the country. The tour guide was fantastic, the nature scenery and experiences I came for were awesome, the accommodations were excellent, and the food was typical of Costa Rica with the sweetest fresh fruit I have ever had. I had a lot of fun and made some new friends, too. Here's a big shout out to Road Scholar for organizing a wonderful week!

This was my fifth Road Scholar tour and Road Scholar is batting 1.000! This was my first outside the USA, and was also the first in which planned interaction with the locals was part of the program. We visited with school children, ate at roadside restaurants, and shopped at a local grocery. The presentations and lectures added value and knowledge about this small Central American country, and I felt I knew much more about it afterwards. The food was fabulous, the fruit decidedly sweet and fresh, and coffee were to die for! The people were warm and welcoming, and I appreciated their outlook on life ("pura vida!"). The activities were diverse, and rounded out the cultural and environmental knowledge of Costa Rica: a pineapple plantation, a coffee plantation, dinner at an organic farm, a visit to an oxcart fabrication facility (the oxcart is Costa Rica's national symbol). White water rafting, a river excursion, walking hanging bridges, a boat trip across the Arenal Lagoon, a stay in a rainforest reserve, all brought the trip to life, and provided a close, intimate look at the people, culture and environment of this small, Central American country.

What a great trip! Traveling around Costa Rica from San Jose to the rain forest, to the cloud forest, through the mountainside and into the lowlands, our group learned so much about the diversity and rich cultural heritage of the Costa Rican people. Our guide, Gloriana, was absolutely wonderful- intelligent, personable and so proud of her country. It was such a special experience that I heartily recommend to all!

Fabulous Trip! Thankyou Roads Scholar!

A Taste of Costa Rica is a perfect description for this delightful trip. If you want to experience the people, culture, and wondrous natural beauty of this very special country go! Plus these are the places that cruise ships cannot reach; so it gives you a different perspective.

Bette

What a great trip! A wonderful group of participants, an extraordinary group leader (Gloriana) and a robust program all made a perfect mix for a terrific experience. Pura Vida!

Road Scholar's, A Taste of Costa Rica, is a wonderful way to experience the country for the first time. I enjoyed the small group of 16 fellow travelers and learned a lot from the excellent instructors along the way. Sally Ullman Durham, NC

Wow, this trip was amazing. The sights, sounds and taste of Costa Rica were marvelous. The guide was so knowledgeable, funny, congenial, approachable and that must not have been easy with 17 people under her wing. I still can't believe I did the zip line at Arenal volcano but I couldn't resist and it was exhilarating. The views of soaring toucans was worth standing on the platform half way up a huge tree. The poisonous snakes and frogs weren't interested in us but we were impressed with their beautiful colors. I didn't notice humidity or bugs. It was nice to be able to eat the food and drink the water and we didn't have any after effects except we'll never eat canned pineapple again after eating it fresh from the field. We enjoyed all of the places we stayed and were impressed with the excellent driving skills of the bus driver over hilly dirt roads and one-lane bridges. Unforgettable experience.

Susan

Outstanding trip. Our leader Gloriana was the BEST. She enlighten us, made everyone comfortable, attended to our needs and created a wonderful environment for all. I recommend this trip to everyone.

Kathleen

A bucket list trip to see the biodiversity and culture of beautiful Costa Rica.

(5)

Excellent program that immerses you in the flora and fauna of Costa Rica while exposing you to the locals and their foods, customs and history. This trip is just the right length and having a small group makes it possible to cover a lot of ground while meeting everyone's needs to stop to see a toucan, sloth or iguana!

Richard

This was the first Group Trip I've ever taken. Having head stories about group tours I wasn't sure what to expect. I was blown away, I didn't want to go hame. The time just flew by, and we made many new friends. The education aspects made it not just a trip, but an adventure. Our tour guide Gloriana help convey the beauty and spirit of the people of Costa Rica. Pure Vida!

June
(5)

Pura Vida - Gloriana is the best ambassador to her beautiful country of Costa Rica. The people, places, tastes and activities I experienced will be treasured. This first RS trip will therefore not be my last!

(5)

For me, The Taste of Costa Rica tour was very comprehensive and educational. The hikes through the rain forest & cloud forest were beautiful and only moderately strenuous. To see tropical wildlife - monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, bats, snakes, birds, frogs, insects, etc. in their natural environment was awesome. Our group leader was outstanding - very knowledgeable, approachable, and attentive to all of our needs. It was a fabulous trip. --Jim K. March 2018.

(5)

Our Taste of Costa Rica trip was wonderful in many many ways. Making the travel arrangements through Road Scholar was easy and accommodating. Being picked up at the airport eliminated any stress I might have had about finding the hotel. Our tour guide, Erick, was dedicated, knowledgeable, funny, and knew the areas of Costa Rica inside and out. I highly recommend this trip if you have never been to Costa Rica and want to experience beautiful forests and vegetation, see 20+ different birds, mammals, and insects in the wild, taste homemade foods, and see a volcano (the highlight for me).

Susan
(5)

This was a wonderful experience. I learned so much from the lectures, hikes and hands on experiences with local people. Our Program Leader (Gloria) was awesome and sets a high bar as a leader. Being in and learning about Costa Rica has changed me as a person, at least a bit, in a good way, I think.

Thomas
(4)

The trip was very accurately described - and the group leader far exceeded expectations. If you are seeking a well-organized, multi-faceted, 'taste' of a country in Central America, I can't imagine a better trip.

Ed
(5)

This program was even better than we hoped for. Our program leader (Gloriana) was outstanding, and our fellow travelers were enthusiastic and fun. I especially appreciated the opportunity to interact with local culture. And, of course, Costa Rica is a remarkably beautiful and interesting place to visit!

Jean

Loved our trip

Ann
(5)

We just came back from our first Road Scholar experience, and it met and exceeded our expectations. Perhaps we were particularly lucky with our group leader, but he was outstanding! His breadth of knowledge that he shared with enthusiasm, and his obvious love for his home country came through in every way, and was a gift to all the participants.

Randall
(5)

We throughly enjoyed our tour of Costa Rica. Our group was small, 18, and we were able to get to know each other and bond. The speakers were knowledgeable and fascinating. But most of all, our tour leader, Erick, was great. He made us feel comfortable and safe. He was always there for us and his knowledge of flora and fauna was a delight to soak in. Of note, the "onion" method of layering clothing came in handy. Because we were in the mountains, it was MUCH colder than I had anticipated Costa Rica to be in February. Do layer and bring at least 1 heavy sweatshirt.

John
(4)

You really do get to know a bit of the country on the Taste of Costa Rica tour. It's about the interior, the highlands. We combined it with visits to both coasts before and after the tour. It's not a glitzy tour about shopping and entertainment; it's about Costa Riqueños and their land.

Karen
(5)

This tour was a perfect introduction to the beautiful country of Costa Rica. Our guide and driver were wonderful. The activities were fun and informative.

Marilyn
(5)

This is a great introduction to a fascinating and eco-rich country. The trip has opportunities to view wild life as well as interesting interactions with the local people.

Carl
(5)

Even with Road Scholar's information and my independent research I was still in awe of the mountains, the different flora and fauna, and the friendly people. I would recommend this trip to anyone, any age, who is open to experiencing a new culture and living a different lifestyle.

Luann
(5)

Everything we wanted it to be! Pura Vida is our theme now after visiting Costa Rica. The eco system, experiences we had has built memories for a life time. If you want to truly experience, people, culture and everyday life this is the trip for you! Ciao!!

Marjorie
(5)

This is an excellent educational tour of a very interesting and beautiful country. The small group experience and knowledgeable and enthusiastic group leader enhanced the trip. Accommodations were adequate; some were better than others, but it was good value for our money.

Elaine
(5)

We went on the Taste of Costa Rica tour in mid-February and had a terrific time. Our group (17 people, a mix of couples and singles) was a good size and included people from various parts of the country. Our guide Jimmy and driver Campbell were friendly, knowledgeable, funny, and really excellent leaders. This is a great trip if you want to learn about many areas of Costa Rica. It is an active trip -- you won't believe how much you will do in 8 days time. Highly recommend this trip.

My expectations for this first trip with Road Scholar were very high and were fully satisfied. No tour can be 100% perfect but this tour came as closed to perfect as possible. I am planning my next trio with Road Scholar. (This is not an advertising statement - it is what I honestly feel)

Diane

This program covers a lot of the culture and history of Costa Rica, and you become immersed in this fascinating region. Wonderful people and wonderful experience.

At times the language Barrie was problematic but the experience was delightful. Our driver was very special.

The "Taste of Costa Rica" program delivers what the title implies. We saw a variety of sites, including rain forest, rivers, country- and city-scapes. We met some of its citizens, including not just business people waiters and clerks, but also schoolchildren, pioneers, agriculteurs, educators. We witnessed the amazing contrasts between the rural culture and the modern technological world that is rapidly penetrating into the heart of the country. We learned that it is possible for a modern society to dynamically enhance and protect the natural environment without forsaking the normal desires of people for a better life. Costa Rica, a country without an army, has a lot to teach the big countries.

Lynne
(5)

Great opportunity to get a feel for Costa Rican culture and wildlife. Excellent program. Our host Wendy Brenes was superb. This was our first experience with RS and we will certainly travel with them again.

Susan
(5)

The Taste of Costa Rica was our 1st trip with Road Scholar and we were very pleased with the learning experiences, the hotels, the food, and the transportation. We were especially impressed by our guide Wendy. She exceeded our expectations. She is very knowledgeable, organized, and great with people. We feel that we learned a lot about the country and its people. We also enjoyed the other participants. We look forward to future trips with Road Scholar as time and funds allow.

Linda
(5)

Visiting the rain forest, cloud forest, and Costa Rican homes provided a memorable and enjoyable trip. The days are full, starting at 7am and ending between 7 and 8 pm. Lots of activities are packed into a day. When we weren't in the forests, we visited coffee and pineapple plantations as well as a bat and butterfly garden. Our guide was wonderful and always made sure we had everything we needed. My friendly and interesting fellow travelers made for a cohesive and fun group.

Carol
(5)

Great trip to Costa Rica. It was like we had known all the people in the group forever! The food was wonderful, we had 3 large meals a day. All the activities were fun and interesting. Now I know why everyone loves Costa Rica

Larry
(5)

My wife and I just completed, "A Taste of Costa Rica." It was great in so many ways. We had a fantastic tour guide. The lectures and lecturers were mostly great. We got to see a few key areas of the country. I think the group of 17 mostly fell in love with Costa Rica!

Ricki
(5)

"A Taste of Costa Rica" was the most amazing and stress-free trip I have ever taken. The scheduling was pure genius -- a mix of exercise/hiking, lectures, fabulous culinary experiences, and having fun with new friends. Our group leader was incredible. My husband and I learned so much about this nation that really has their priorities right. Road Scholar took the stress out of navigating the sometimes precarious roads of Costa Rica and led us through amazing natural sites.

Sandra
(5)

Taste of CR is good for people that are short on time, would like a good general overview of the country, and don't mind full days with lots of planned activities.

Jo
(5)

I would highly recommend the trip "A Taste of Costa Rica!" I was apprehensive before going but it was absolutely a fulfilling experience. We learned so much, had a water rafting experience, and met some very interesting Costa Ricans through tours, home visits, and restaurants. The tour guide was excellent! The fellow travelers were an interesting group and each had a good sense of humour.

Dawn
(5)

The "Taste of Costa Rica" tour will exceed all of your expectations for an incredible experience. Our guide and our program driver were the best. If you want to experience real Costa Rican life, this is the tour for you.

The Road Scholar Costa Rica tour was an amazing experience that totally exceeded all my expectations. I recommended this tour as something not to miss. Costa Rica and her citizens is one of the true treasure of our planet. A joy to experience.

Lorraine
(5)

A Taste of Costa Rica was a wonderful trip! Our guide, Jorge Mario, was patient, accommodating, kind, humorous, prepared and organized. I have health related dietary restrictions, sodium, and Mario was most attentive to this. The accommodations were excellent. They ranged from the rustic to the regal! Road Scholar offers what other groups do not.... This special touch makes all the difference!

Cheryl
(5)

Amazing experience in Costa Rica with Road Scholar!!! The experiences and friendships will last a lifetime and I look forward to many more wonderful adventures with fellow Road Scholar's as we expand our knowledge of other cultures and enrich our lives.

I loved the trip! Our driver and guide were wonderful- I really enjoyed the insights into the daily life of the local people, the non- tourist off the beaten track information. The smaller size of the group allowed for flexibility, as well as the general mix of ages. The only real negative was the airline (American) - trying to get to Costa Rica -freq delays/ canceling flights, lost /missing luggage, then deliberately leaving it in Miami overnight instead of putting it on the next flight. Then on departure- they CANCELED my reservation- and once I proved I had a reservation and I did not need to re purchase, I had to ARGUE at the airport to have my already PAID for upgrade reinstated- which I nearly did not get, as the flight was "full" / overbooked. The agent actually started to blame me, despite me pulling my email documents PROVING I had my reservations as far back as Jan/ Feb. I got stuck in a window seat, which I do not like. I hope to NEVER fly American again if I can help it.

Barbara
(5)

This was a great trip to sample so much of the country. It also has a double meaning as we tasted pineapple, coffee, cacao, sugar cane and juice from many of the fruits they grow. If you really want to learn about the country, see wildlife and birds, see the types of agriculture they have, raft easy but exciting rapids, hike in the forest-this is the trip for you. Javier was a great leader and took care of us very well. We also had a great bus driver who knew how to navigate some of the mountain roads extremely well.

Robin
(5)

This was a wonderful experience that exceeded my expectations in every way. The degree of organization was so high that everything went--or seemed to go--very smoothly. Our guide was an educator, friend, advisor, and companion. Discovering the wonders of Costa Rica was exciting and elevating--both literally and figuratively. I can't wait for my next Road Scholar trip!

Charles
(5)

The Taste of Costa Rica program is excellent, with a good mix of activities and free time. Javier, the guide, is very knowledgeable and expert at his job. The instructors were very educational and entertaining. We got a good overview of the interior of Costa Rica.

Martha
(5)

Our "Taste of Costa Rica" trip was outstanding and a terrific value! It exceeded my expectations in every way. There is no way a self-planned trip could have achieved the extensive overview we received as we traveled with confidence under the excellent leadership of our guide. Neither could we have orchestrated these experiences independently for the reasonable cost of the program. I highly recommend this trip!

Roberta
(5)

My first Road Scholar trip to Costa Rica was sublime! Our guide was outstanding ~ so kind and knowledgeable. I can't wait to take another Road Scholar trip!

Jessica
(5)

This tour was everything I could have wished for and more. Our tour leader, Jorge Mario, was fabulous. Costa Rica is so beautiful, go now, you know you want to!

Edith

everything about this trip met or exceeded my expectations. i'm looking forward to the next trip with road scholar.

Forrest
(5)

It would be nice to be able to review one's answers and comments, and make any needed changes, before submitting the evaluation.

Linda
(5)

This is an exceptional trip, and in addition to showcasing the truly beautiful country and wildlife, it opens a window on what it means to be a country passionately involved in preserving its unique heritage, environments and ecosystems. We can learn a lot from them. Gilberth (Chito) is a gifted and accomplish leader, and together with his sidekick Carlitos they are an exceptional and fun team. Go!

Carol
(5)

Great program. I can not imagine a better way to get a taste of Costa Rica. I would highly recommend this to a first time visitor who wants an introduction to the people, wildlife and even a little history.

Nancy
(5)

I strongly feel if you want to visit Costa Rica and understand what Costa Rica is all about this is the trip you should take. From one end to the other it is so diverse and interesting. The people are warm and friendly and appreciate tourism for what it has done for their economy. I felt very safe in this country and never worried about my belongings, but then again I had Road Scholar there with me. My first experience with Road Scholar and believe me it won't be the last, excellent value..awesome experience.

Tim
(5)

This was an excellent introduction to Costa Rica's history, flora, fauna and countryside. The guide was knowledgeable, passionate about the subject matter and a lot of fun to travel with. I highly recommend this trip to anyone seeking an easy, active and educational introduction to Costa Rica. I am impressed with how well the program accommodated our diverse group so that all had a 'personal experience.'

Patricia
(5)

This program exceeded my expectations in every way!

Mary
(5)

This was a trip of a lifetime. We woke up to howler monkeys, rafted, hiked, tasted chocolate, coffee and pineapples and saw new birds, reptiles and mammals every day. Every day included enough activities for a week. Go!

Maurice
(5)

A Taste of Costa Rica was both delightful and informative. The flora and fauna of Costa Rica are beautiful, and interactions with the people of Costa Rica were educational. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who enjoys the outdoors and has an interest in and concern for the environment.

Thorana
(5)

I've been on two Road Scholar trips and highly recommend them. Both had fabulous Group Leaders, knowledgeable lectures, and lots of good experiences with local interests. All I had to do was show up!

Patricia
(5)

What a wonderful experience this program was. We learned so much about Costa Rica, the people, and the culture. The presentations of the experiences of the local people helped to increase our knowledge of this wonderful country. The variety of experiences from rafting to touring a pineapple plantation made the trip interesting and active.

Linda
(5)

Costa Rica came alive for me during my 9-day tour with Road Scholar. The tour far exceeded my expectations. Our guide was exceptional in her knowledge, skills, and warmth. She tended to our every need and everyone had a great time. While being educated I also had fun and made new friends! What more could you ask for?

Brid
(5)

Skip the beaches tours, take this one see the real Costa Rica. Saw sloths, 3 kinds of monkeys, toucans, macaws, green parrots, toads, bats and only one snake. February was 60 to 85 degrees, dry cool lovely. Zipline in Monte Verde awesome. No mosquitos anywhere. Bring good camera. Hit the hot springs. River raft then swim with parhannas (they don't bite, unless you are a pineapple)!

Marion
(5)

Costa rica program was mostly outdoors. W white waterm rafting was a first the food was plentiful. Plenty of water was supplied. I felt very much in touch with the Costa Rica people. The program is informative about agriculture and growing vegetation. I be k I eve it appeals to most

This was a wonderful trip with a good variety of activities, from nature to cultural. The rain forest accommodations at Selva Verde were particularly interesting, even without air conditioning. I would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to sample what Costa Rica has to offer, which is a lot!

(5)

"A Taste of Costa Rica" is an excellent tour of a very interesting and beautiful country. Lecturers were very knowledgeable and entertaining and the Road Scholar guide assured a wonderful educational experience. I hope to go back to Costa Rica for another Road Scholar tour as there is much more to this fascinating country.

Samuel
(5)

This tour was a wonderful introduction to Costa Rica -- the country, the people, the wildlife, the food and more. Our guide, Gloriana Sanchez, was very knowledgeable and her great sense of humor helped make the trip more fun. Gloriana took care of all the details and was always happy to help with special requests, like finding a zipline tour for us, even though it was not part of the scheduled tour.

Patricia
(5)

It's just what it says -- a taster tour: tasting both the country and the products of the country.

Beverly
(5)

A wonderful sampling of a beautiful country. Physical activity is a bit more than "active," particularly for the hanging bridges and walking to/from accommodations.

Barbara
(5)

The "Taste of Costa Rica" tour was excellent. It exceeded my expectations. Pedro Bosques, our tour leader, was excellent and made the trip special.

Mary Jo
(5)

This trip was phenomenal. We had so much fun doing so many different things. It was a great introduction to Costa Rica and I would highly recommend it to anyone. Pura Vida!!

Jacqueline
(5)

Trip was great and I highly recommend it. It was my first road scholar trip and I loved it. Will definitely do another one.

William
(5)

An excellent learning experience. Very knowledgeable guide. Saw more wildlife and birds than I expected. Particularly enjoyed taking pictures. The four rafting/boating experiences were a highlight, as were the rain forest walks. Didn't see any mosquitos!

Linda
(5)

Just arrived home from our Costa Rica trip. It was an amazing experience. Jimmy, our leader and Enrique, our driver were wonderful. They were like family and it was sad to leave them. Our group was small and it was especially fun to get to know everyone. Our speakers and field trips were exceptional. Accommodations were fine and in great locations. Food was wonderful. Couldn't have asked for a better trip!!

Kathryn
(5)

I was absolutely thrilled with this experience. I will definitely use Road Scholar in the future.

Bonnie
(5)

I recently returned from the Road Scholar "Taste of Costa Rica" program. It was wonderful having a small group experience( only 18 travelers) which allowed us to get up close & personal with all that Costa Rica has to offer. As a zoologist by education and a botanist by avocation I can say that the variety of flora & fauna that we saw was truly amazing. The icing on the cake was learning about "ecotourism" and how we can all participate in helping preserve endangered areas of our planet. Gilberth, our leader, was not only knowledgeable but lots of fun besides. He & our bus driver Carlos could spot wildlife everywhere we went and made sure we all saw it too. Thanks guys for a great trip! Bonnie

Thomas
(5)

This program had a lot of variety and activity. We had 4 nature excursions (including the canopy walk), 3 farm/factory tours, 4 lectures on history and current topics, 3 boat excursions, 3 museums/natural displays, 3 interactions with local families and 3 visits to local stores. Somehow, we also had 2 partial free afternoons to enjoy the sun. The program leader was top-notch. It was hotter than I expected so bring lots of t-shirts.

Salpi
(5)

This is a wonderful first introduction tour of Costa Rica. I particularly liked it because it toured the heart of the Country, not the touristy overdeveloped Coastal 'resorts'. I felt that I got to know the real Costa Rica; and hope to go there again with Road Scholar in the near future!

David
(5)

If you are thinking about doing this, just do it.. you won't be sorry

Joanne
(5)

This is a wonderful trip! Costa Ricans are friendly people and most speak English. The food, hotels, activities, animals and birds were all awesome! There were only 2 days that we got out and walked as much as the program specified, however, so be prepared for a somewhat sedentary experience.

JoAnn
(5)

Our small group hiked in the rain forest, rafted through river rapids, soaked in hot steaming pools and viewed shockingly beautiful flowers and birds through sweet cedar and hanging moss. We learned about the nation’s history, its pineapple and coffee plantations and the commitment of its people for peace and the ecological value of their land. We explored a volcanic mountain and tropical flora and fauna in the lowlands and the cloud forest. We met farmers and others who shared their experiences and dreams for their country. With the logistics of transportation, food and lodging expertly arranged for us we were free to become first time road scholars taking full advantage of all of the activities and lectures offered to us on this fantastic trip.

Rita
(4)

"A Taste of Costa Rica" was my first Road Scholar trip, and I found the experience very educational and personally rewarding. The lecturers were excellent, well chosen for their expertise, passion for their work, and ability to communicate it. Our guide was very knowledgeable and without him, I would have missed the flora and the fauna on our walks. The activities highlighted the richness of the region. The one caution I would have for potential travelers on this trip is that they know each day is packed with activities, and you would be on the go from 8 in the morning (one day started at 7) until about 7 at night. There is one day at a hotel in Arenal that has thermal pools, though, and it was very relaxing to soak in one! Our group was small - 16 -, and I really enjoyed getting to know them on this trip. I will savor my tastes of Costa Rica for a long time to come.

Sandra
(5)

Loved our first Road Scholar experience and are confident it won't be our last!

Judith
(5)

One of the best trips we have ever taken with Road Scholars! Costa Rica is a beautiful country full of a diverse and beautiful people and wonderful natural sights. This program gave us a taste of some of the best it has to offer. Pura Vida!

Barbara
(5)

With a totally dynamic leader, A Taste of Costa Rica was even better than I expected. The nature walks and field trips to pineapple and coffee farms and the Butterfly Garden and the Bat Jungle were all fascinating and the white-water rafting was an exhilarating new experience.I am so glad I went.

Suzanne
(5)

This "taste" of Costa Rica certainly whet my appetite for another course. This country is fascinating on every level; the new and delicious fruits, the amazing mammals, massive rainforest trees, colorful birds, and friendly people. It is certainly a world unto itself.
