1
Check-in, Registration, Welcome Dinner, Orientation

Activity note: Hotel check-in from 4:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration: After you have your room assignment, come over to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in.

Dinner: In a private banquet room at the hotel, we’ll enjoy a plated meal with salad, entrée, dessert, coffee, tea, water; other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Periods in the daily schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Watercolor Instruction & Painting, Open Studio Practice

Activity note: Full day of instruction and painting.

Breakfast: In the hotel’s Victorian-era Grand Dining Room, we’ll enjoy a buffet with an assortment of seasonal fresh fruits, yogurt, scrambled eggs, hot and cold cereals, breakfast meats, breakfast potatoes, grits, homemade pastries, toast, bagels, and muffins, and a daily special breakfast entrée, plus coffee, tea, milk, juices, and water.

Morning: Our instructor begins the Exploring Watercolor with some projects that focus on various types of color theory after reviewing the color wheel. The group explores and practices painting with only monochromatic color, color triads, and complementary colors on smaller projects like cards and bookmarks. These exercises will acquaint the students with vocabulary that will be utilized throughout the week. Questions are encouraged and there is a review before breaking for lunch. We will then begin working on our first drawings and paintings, incorporating these techniques.

Lunch: In a banquet room at the hotel, we’ll enjoy a selection of salad, sandwich or soup, plus coffee, tea, and water.

Afternoon: We’ll continue painting with individual supervision and suggestions by our instructor. Time to focus, immerse and respond—one on one.

Dinner: Dinner in the banquet room.

Evening: We will finish up the first day’s painting with open studio practice.

Watercolor Instruction & Painting & Behind Scenes Hotel Tour

Activity note: Full day of instruction and painting, with possibility of outdoor class. Some walking during hotel tour.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: Instructor demonstrates making shapes into forms using light and shadow. Students create a color scale from lightest tint to darkest shade and learn how use of complementary colors makes shades. Instructor demonstrates how to draw and paint different indigenous trees like oaks and palms. Students practice on small watercolor paper how to draw and then paint the different trees. Students are given photos of different landscapes with close-ups of trees and draw out two landscapes with the focus of the paintings being the trees and the colors and textures they display. Students watch as instructor begins her two watercolor paintings.

Lunch: Hotel meal.

Afternoon: We’ll go behind the scenes to see how the Jekyll Island Club has maintained its standards of luxurious service for over a century. After the tour, we will continue to explore a variety of techniques and exercises designed to enhance creativity and give an open, loose feeling to our work. We’ll also continue working on our paintings.

Dinner: Dinner in the banquet room.

Evening: We will have an open studio with the goal to complete one or more small paintings and begin to think in terms of series.

Watercolor Instruction, Free Time

Activity note: Full day of instruction and painting.

Breakfast: Hotel buffet.

Morning: Onto more painting! Water, sand, beach scenes, implying people and dogs, birds and boats - that is what students will explore with watercolor today in preparation for painting two ocean scenes on Thursday! Small cards are again used to practice and experiment before getting to a larger format painting. Artistic tissue, toothbrushes, pieces of credit cards and different brushes give students tools that will make watercolor fun! With free time in the afternoon, students are encouraged to take pictures of Jekyll Beach or Driftwood Beach for Thursday’s paintings.

Lunch: This meal has been excluded from the program cost and is on your own to enjoy what you like. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Suggestions include the Club Café, Jekyll Island Club Hotel's popular bakery-delicatessen; the Victorian-era Grand Dining Room; or the Courtyard at Crane, which offers casual fine dining a short stroll from the main hotel.

Afternoon: Free time. Take this opportunity for personal independent exploration to see and do what interests you most. Please refer to the list of Free Time Opportunities. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions.

Dinner: On your own.

Evening: At leisure.

Watercolor Q&A, Program Concludes

Morning: Our instructor will lead a final question and answer session and wrap up to summarize what we’ve learned. This concludes our program.
