Omni Richmond Hotel

Activity note: The walk to the State Capitol is three blocks, some of it at an incline.

Breakfast: Breakfast in the hotel first floor dining area is a Buffet with choice of fresh fruits, yogurts, organic and gluten free cereals, bread and butter bar featuring oven-baked fresh breads and bakery selections, farm fresh eggs and omelets cooked to order, bacon and sausage, breakfast potatoes, coffee or tea and choice of juice.

Morning: This program is primarily aimed at people who wish to undertake genealogical research on ancestors from Virginia. The primary facility for the program will be the Library of Virginia, the state library. It is one of the best facilities for this kind of research in the country, and in fact for Virginia records it is the best. It holds copies of records from all the counties and cities of Virginia, including census, land, and military records and vital statistics. Each day begins with a class taught by an expert on Virginia genealogy and research. This morning at the hotel classroom our instructor presents “Introduction to Genealogy & Research: Making a plan of action.” .

Lunch: At the hotel dining area, we’ll have a tasty lunch with either a plated entrée served with sides and rolls and butter, or offerings such as choice of salads with dressing options, soup, deli sandwiches. Served with dessert and choice of coffee, tea, or water.

Afternoon: For the afternoon, we will divide into two groups, and participants can select the group they will be in. One group, for those who are early into their research, will stay at the hotel and have a class session, “Conversations on Projects”, in which the instructor takes up individual research topics and talks about how to proceed. This group will also have the option of a mid-afternoon walk to the State Capitol (3 blocks away) for a guided tour. The second group, generally aimed at those who are more advanced in their research, will travel to the Virginia Historical Society and be able work in the Library there for the afternoon. The holdings at the VHS Library are not as broad as the Library of Virginia, with limited court and public records, but there are extensive personal papers and family records in the collections. The VHS catalog is online so participants can discover before going whether their families are in the collections.

Dinner: The group will go together to a Shockoe Slip restaurant for dinner, enjoying the 19th C. brick, wood, and iron charm of a place such as Sam Miller’s Café or the Tobacco Company. The plated meal will include dessert and a beverage choice of tea, ice tea, coffee, or water, and with other beverages available for purchase.

Evening: Classes in the evening will provide a break from the library and research. We begin this evening with an overview of the history of Virginia. The state had a big role during the Revolution and the founding of the nation. It was an epicenter of the Civil War, and one effect was that a number of courthouses (and their records) were destroyed.

Breakfast: Breakfast buffet in the hotel first floor dining area

Morning: This morning we board a van and head for the Virginia Center on Aging’s meeting room, located across the street from the Library of Virginia. (An option is to walk the 7 blocks, uphill, from the hotel to the Center and Library.) We begin our day with a short session at the Center meeting room on “Research at the Library of Virginia.” The instructor is an accomplished genealogist with good experience working at this library. Next we head over to the Library of Virginia, where we obtain library cards and take a brief tour. Then it is time to begin research. This will be the daily pattern: first to the Center meeting room for a class session, then to the Library for research.

Lunch: We head back across the street to the Center on Aging meeting room for a Box lunch. Each lunch we will have a chat about a relevant topic. At the beginning of the program, we will make an assessment of the skill levels of the group, and plan the classes for that week accordingly. A likely topic for this lunch is "The Library of Virginia catalog."

Afternoon: This afternoon we work at the Library of Virginia. Individual consultation will be available to help folks get started. The library closes at 5:00 pm. A van will depart from the Library for the hotel at 4:15 pm and 4:30 pm, or participants can walk.

Dinner: Dinner at the hotel in the second floor dining area. Plated entrées are served with a Virginia green salad, vegetables, dinner rolls and butter, and dessert, with choice of coffee, decaffeinated coffee, or iced tea.
