Arrival, Check-In, Orientation and Introductions

Dinner: A hearty homecooked meal prepared especially for you is served buffet-style in the lodge dining room, including soft beverages, and dessert. Beer or wine may be purchased.

Evening: GETTING TO KNOW YOU: Your program coordinator will go over the schedule for the week and you will learn more about your coordinator and your instructors. We have introductions and discuss what everyone hopes to take home from their experiences in classes. The instructor would like to learn about your experience level and interests.The remainder of the evening is free for you to settle in and prepare for the week. The lodge includes a lounge area with a diverse library, games, dvds and videos, and a computer for Internet access; Wifi available. The French doors surround an enclosed Spanish style flagstone courtyard with a spectacular view of Sleeping Ute Mountain.

Getting started: Navajo weaving and Pottery building

Breakfast: Our full, country-style buffet breakfast features a hot entrée and delicious homemade granola.

Morning: For introductory sessions, grandparents and grandchildren are taught separately. For the rest of the program, grandparents and grandchildren work together, but the group is split in two for a better learning environment. Grandchildren -Navajo weaving Weaving is taught by a Navajo weaver on small looms so that the weaving can be worked on during the week and completed. Grandparents- Primitive pottery Pottery begins with the dirt and ends with the piece(s) you form, paint and polish in the way the Ancestral Puebloans did. Pit firing depends on the level of fire hazard at the time.

Lunch: A buffet style homemade lunch is provided in the lodge dining room, featuring seasonally appropriate foods, beverages and dessert.

Afternoon: Grandparents-Navajo rug weaving; Grandchildren - Primitive pottery

Dinner: A hearty homecooked meal prepared especially for you is served buffet-style in the lodge dining room, including soft beverages, and dessert. Beer or wine may be purchased.

Evening: Osteology--or Everything you wanted to know about bones but were afraid to ask.

Morning: Grandchildren-Archaeology; Staff archaeologist gives a talk about the ancient Native American cultures that lived here hundreds of years ago. Visit a ceremonial kiva, restored to the way it probably was when it was originally used. Grandparents-Primitive pottery

Lunch: A buffet style homemade lunch is provided in the lodge dining room, featuring seasonally appropriate foods, beverages and dessert.

Afternoon: Grandchildren-Primitive pottery; Grandparents-Archaeology. See above.

Morning: Group one-Archaeology; Staff archaeologist will lead participants in excavation of an actual Ancestral Puebloan ruin site. Learn how archaeologists work and find out what is under the ground! Group two-Navajo weaving

Lunch: A buffet style homemade lunch is provided in the lodge dining room, featuring seasonally appropriate foods, beverages and dessert.

Afternoon: Group one-Navajo weaving; Group two-Archaeological excavation. (See above.)

Dinner: A hearty homecooked meal prepared especially for you is served buffet-style in the lodge dining room, including soft beverages, and dessert. Beer or wine may be purchased.

Evening: Native American Culture, Music & Dance: Members of the Ute and Navajo tribes tell how they live in the modern world. Participants are invited to join in the traditional dances.

Afternoon: Group one-Excavation and analysis of found artifacts; Group two-Pottery

Morning: All day field trip to Mesa Verde National Park accompanied by staff archaeologist. Includes a ranger-guided tour of one of the special ruin sites.

Lunch: Enjoy a picnic lunch at Mesa Verde.

Afternoon: Field trip continued

Dinner: Savor a relaxed meal cooked and served outdoors for you on the Kelly Place courtyard. Unburden your mind as you watch the southwestern sunset on your final evening viewing the beautiful Sleeping Ute Mountain.
