Check-in available from 1:00 p.m.
Program Registration 1:00 – 5:30 p.m. Come to the Road Scholar check-in at the front desk of the ministry center for your room assignment, to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing the up-to-date schedule that reflects any changes, other important information, and to confirm the time and location of the Orientation session. If you arrive late, please ask for your packet when you check in. We will then enjoy a social for the program’s official start, with soft drinks, beer, wine, and hors d’oeuvres.
In the monastery dining room, we will enjoy a welcome banquet buffet. Wherever possible, our food is purchased locally; for example, milk and ice cream from Cloverleaf Creamery, cheese from Ballard's, meat from Falls Brand Meat. Juice, coffee, tea, water are included. All meals are served buffet in the dining room. Our chef purchases much of the food locally, often from organic farmers. For example, milk comes in glass bottles from a small dairy whose small herd consists of registered Holsteins, which are fed on grass—a rare exception amid the large dairies of the area. At breakfast, on everyday but Sunday (when there are cereals and toast), there is a hot entree, cold cereal and assorted fruit. Juice, coffee, tea, and snacks are available at all times. There are salads, vegetables, an entree and a desert, and usually fresh fruit, at each lunch and dinner.
Orientation. 7:30 p.m. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. This is a Road Scholar Retreats program. Our programming at Retreat locations includes opportunities for light morning exercise, interaction with members of the local community, a farm-to-table or locally sourced meal, and evening entertainment. Most activities will be led by local instructors and personnel from the monastery, unless specified otherwise. Road Scholars are welcome to join the monks for daily mass throughout the week, which will take place at 7:00 a.m. on weekdays, 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, and during any of the liturgy hours throughout the program. Periods in the schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding. Continue getting to know your fellow Road Scholars, settle in, and get a good night’s rest for the day ahead.
