At a Glance

In 1492, alongside Columbus’ voyage to the Americas, Spain saw the fall of Granada and the expulsion of the Jews. Many Jews converted to Christianity under pressure — known as Conversos — while some continued practicing Judaism in secret as Crypto-Jews. Join artist and writer Christopher Gibson as he explores the journeys of these families to New Mexico, where they sought refuge on the edge of the Spanish Empire, believing they were beyond the reach of the Inquisition. Discover how their stories reveal enduring struggles for faith, identity and survival in a new land.
