Check-in, Orientation, and Welcome Dinner

Activity note: Meet the group leader and enjoy your first group dinner in Alaska. Go over the program's itinerary and start getting to know the other participants.

Dinner: Enjoy a delicious buffet style dinner at the River's Edge Resort.

Evening: Orientation and Introductions- Start getting to know your fellow participants and get and overview of your upcoming adventures!

Take the train south, stretch your legs, and start learning!

Activity note: Ride the Alaska Railroad south to Denali and your new home away from home. After lunch and a short orientation to your Denali accommodations, enjoy a guided outing before taking some time to explore Denali's Visitor Center.

Breakfast: Enjoy a buffet Breakfast at the River's Edge Resort.

Morning: Ride the Alaska Railroad south to Denali, taking in sweeping views along the way.

Lunch: Home style buffet lunch at Denali Education Center's Riverside Hall.

Afternoon: Take in a short guided hike with your grand child and get your first look at Denali National Park.

Dinner: Home made buffet dinner at Denali Education Center's Riverside Hall.

Hike Savage River Loop together!

Activity note: Head out into Denali's alpine area and start learning about the Park's diverse ecology.

Breakfast: Riverside Hall

Morning: Travel 15 miles down the Park Road and hike the Savage River Trail. Explore the tundra plants, ground squirrels, and birds that live alongside the river.

Lunch: In the field

Afternoon: Grandparents and Grandkids work together to make Yup'ik-style spirit masks. Together with your educator you will delve into the traditional role these masks played in Alaska Native cultures.

Dinner: Riverside Hall

Evening: Guest speaker TBA. Schedule for expert local evening presenters in Denali will be announced on first day of program.

Explore the Subarctic and Raft the Nenana River!

Activity note: Enjoy our Exploring the Subarctic class in the morning before trading the classroom in for a dry suit. On the Nenana river, glacier whitewater gradually increases from mild Class I moving currents to exciting Class III/IV rapids in the lower canyon.

Breakfast: Riverside Hall

Morning: Learn about the sometimes surprising, always extreme, conditions that shape life in Denali and define a subarctic ecosystem in “Exploring the Subarctic.” Everyone attends first hour of class, then grandkids depart for a guided hike on the Oxbow Trail while grandparents continue with class and delve deeper into the subarctic.

Lunch: Riverside Hall

Afternoon: Join your grand kids on the exciting glacially fed Nenana River. The rapids gradually increase from a mild Class 1 current to an exhilarating Class III/IV in the lower part of the canyon.

Dinner: Riverside Hall

Evening: Guest speaker TBA. Schedule for expert local evening presenters in Denali will be announced on first day of program.

Journey to the Heart of Denali and Eielson Visitor Center.

Activity note: Journey along Denali's Park road and out to the Eielson Visitor Center. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife as you take in the Denali's stunning landscapes via one of their park buses.

Breakfast: Riverside Hall

Morning: Enjoy stunning scenery and wildlife watching opportunities on a day-long journey into Denali National Park by shuttle bus to Eielson Visitor Center. Grandparents and grandkids travel together to the Visitor Center at Mile 66 of the Denali National Park road and search for grizzly bear, moose, Dall sheep, caribou, and wolves along the way.

Lunch: Lunch will be a packed field lunch. We provide re-usable lunch sacks at Riverside Hall. Lunches are assembled after breakfast - choose your favorite sandwich fixings, snack bars, and fruit.

Dinner: Riverside Hall

Evening: Free time to rest, relax, and unwind after an exciting day in the Park.

Wildlife of Denali class and Interpretive hike in the Park.

Activity note: Take some time to learn about how Alaska's wildlife deals with the challenge of our subarctic climate before exploring a new Denali trail. Make sure to watch out for signs of wildlife along the trail and put your newly acquired knowledge to the test!

Breakfast: Buffet style in Riverside Hall

Morning: Learn more about the extraordinary animals that call Denali home and their marvelous adaptations to life at high latitudes in “Wildlife of Denali.” After the first hour, grandkids depart for a 4.5 mile hike with an elevation gain of up to 1800 feet while grandparents continue learning about how Denali's creatures survive in the subarctic.

Lunch: Buffet style in Riverside Hall

Afternoon: Kids will eat lunch in the field. Grandparents depart for a hike in the Park. After the hikes, grandparents and grandkids work together to put the finishing touches on their spirit masks. As the masks dry, Grandparents and kids work together to write a narrative for their mask.

Dinner: Buffet style in Riverside Hall

Group hike and Free Time together!

Activity note: A day of options and opportunities await! The morning includes a guided outing while the afternoon includes free time to "choose your own adventure"!

Breakfast: Buffet style in Riverside Hall

Morning: Grandparents: Explore the rich habitat of Horseshoe Lake on a 2-mile walk. Grandkids: take a 3-mile hike along the Triple Lakes Trails and work in teams to uncover the story of an animal that used the trail before you.

Lunch: Buffet style in Riverside Hall

Afternoon: Choose your own adventure. Grandparents and grandkids may explore the Park independently, or partake in optional activities, such as flightseeing, sled dog kennel tours, hiking, etc. (Coordinators will help arrange reservations for optional activities.)

Dinner: Buffet style in Riverside Hall

Evening: Program wrap-up and art show- featuring your spirit masks!
