Stevie Wonder captured the essence of New York in his 1973 song "Living for The City," singing, “New York, just like I pictured it — skyscrapers and everything.” During the 20th century, New York’s burgeoning skyline became iconic across the country and around the world through the innovation of mass media. Discover the evolution of the New York skyscraper from its roots in 19th-century cast iron loft buildings to the complex structures of today. This in-depth look explores the connections between architecture, engineering, planning, zoning and economics within the context of broader social currents, as expressed in the towers rising in New York City and portrayed in art, film, television and song.
