1
Arrival & Check In/Dinner/Orientation

Activity note: Hotel and Program Check-in after 3:00 p.m. Dinner 5:00 p.m. Orientation 6:30 p.m.

Afternoon: Program Registration, 3:00 p.m. After you have your room assignment, come to the Road Scholar table to register with the program staff and get your welcome packet containing your name-tag, up-to-date schedule that reflects any last-minute changes, and other important information. If you arrive late, this packet will be available at the Orientation meeting held at 6:30 p.m. at the Holt Lodge, first floor meeting room.

Dinner: At the Lake View Dining Hall, we will enjoy a cafeteria-style dinner; beverage choices will include coffee, tea, water.

Evening: Orientation, 6:30 p.m. The Group Leader will greet everyone and lead introductions. We will review the up-to-date program schedule, discuss roles and responsibilities, logistics, safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and answer questions. Periods in the daily schedule designated as “Free time” and “At leisure” offer opportunities to do what you like and make your experience even more meaningful and memorable according to your personal preferences. The Group Leader will be happy to offer suggestions. Program activities, schedules, personnel, and indicated distances or times may change due to local circumstances/conditions. In the event of changes, we will alert you as quickly as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

Activity note: Evening Entertainment 6:30 p.m.

Breakfast: At the Lakeview Dining Hall, our cafeteria-style breakfast choices include eggs, sausage, bacon, hot and cold cereals, fruit, Yogurt, plus coffee, tea, water, milk.

Morning: We will begin with introductions, then learn from a short instructor-led lecture to the Lathe and safety in woodturning. We will discuss Lathe and tool terminology, chucks, live center and spur drive. We will be assigned a Lathe and the instructor will begin additional instruct on starting our first piece.

Lunch: At Lakeview Dining Hall, we will be welcomed with cafeteria-style choices including soup, salads, sandwiches, fruit and perhaps a homemade treat; coffee, tea, water included.

Afternoon: Returning to the classroom, we will continue our morning work with a review of safety and one-on-one work with the instructor.

Dinner: Served in Lakeview dining hall from 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Evening: At 6:30 p.m. we will meet in the Holt Lodge first floor meeting room and board our bus for the five mile drive into historic downtown Ripley, where we will visit the Alpine Theater to be treated to a classic movie, complete with popcorn and drinks, before returning to Cedar Lakes.

Breakfast: Served in Lakeview dining hall from 7:15-8:30 a.m.

Morning: We will return to class for basic Lathe practice of roughing, beads and coves. With the basics understood we will begin a project of our choice.

Lunch: Served in Lakeview dining hall from 12:00-1:00 p.m.

Afternoon: Returning to the classroom, our morning’s work continues as our instructor expands with work continue on basic projects.

Dinner: Served in Lakeview dining hall from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Evening: At leisure. Our classes will be open this evening for open studio sessions with our instructors.

Breakfast: Served in Lakeview dining hall from 7:15-8:30 p.m.

Morning: After discussion and demo on various projects, we will begin our second project such as candle holders, ornaments or honey dippers under the instructors guidance.

Lunch: Served in Lakeview dining hall from 12:00-1:00 p.m.

Afternoon: During the afternoon class, the instructor will cover the topics of finishing and color. We will practice techniques on the projects we have completed.

Dinner: Served in Lakeview dining hall from 5:00-6:00 p.m.

Evening: We’ll meet in Holt Lodge for a field trip this evening by bus to an authentic Appalachian moonshine distillery. Located less than two miles from the center, the owner will lead us around the facility and tell us about the history of moonshine in the hills of West Virginia. We’ll then return to Cedar Lakes.

Activity note: Dinner at 5:00 p.m. Studio Tour 6:30 p.m.

Breakfast: Breakfast in Lakeview dining hall 7:15-8:00 a.m.

Morning: This morning we will begin a new project and/or complete the previous days work. The instructor will introduce the process of burning and offset turning.

Lunch: Served in Lakeview dining hall from 12:00-1:00 p.m.

Afternoon: As afternoon class begins we will work to complete projects and then work together to set up the display for the evening studio tour.

Dinner: At 5:00 we will have dinner together as a class in the side dining room of Lakeview dining hall. We will take time to reflect on the weeks accomplishments and instructors will pass out the passport stickers.

Evening: After dinner, classrooms will be open and we will visit each room to observe the accomplishment of our class sessions. Instructors will be present to offer an overview of the week.

Morning: As we put the finishing touches on our project, our instructor will offer further ideas and techniques we can take home for future woodturning projects.

Lunch: Served in Lakeview dining hall from 11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The program ends after lunch.
