Few major earthquakes have been captured live on national TV, but such was the case with the October 17, 1989, Loma Prieta Earthquake — often called the "World Series Earthquake" because it struck during Game 3 between Bay Area rivals, the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland A's. A radical new fire suppression system, designed by Deputy Fire Chief Frank Blackburn, went operational just six days before the quake. His vision and courage prevented a repeat of the catastrophic 1906 Earthquake that destroyed 86% of San Francisco’s standing structures. This is the untold story.
