Join Christopher Gibson, an award-winning artist, writer and arts educator based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, for an engaging presentation in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. New Mexico, where nearly half the population identifies as Hispanic and 28% speak Spanish, has deep-rooted connections to Spain and Mexico. Explore the intricate tapestry of history and culture that defines New Mexico, from the early Spanish explorers of the 16th century to the first permanent colony established by Juan de Oñate y Salazar in 1598. Indigenous presence in the region dates back 23,000 years, resulting in a complex history of conflict and cooperation with Hispanic settlers. The 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo marked New Mexico's transition from Mexican to U.S. territory, eventually leading to statehood. Celebrate the Hispanic contributions to New Mexican culture by exploring the arts, festivities, history, food, language, religion and architecture that reflect the Spanish and Mexican presence in this unique state.
