In honor of Women's History Month, this 4-part series celebrates four indefatigable English women who survived dangerous, sometimes near-death encounters. These female trailblazers belonged to a rare breed of Britain's upper-class society in an era when it was almost unheard of for a female to travel abroad unaccompanied by a man. Bucking social conventions, these explorers embarked on journeys that would often take them to some of the most misogynistic regions of the world. In part four of this series, archaeologist and lecturer Nicholas Stavrinides takes you on the 100-year journey of Dame Freya Stark, who lived an epic life as a prolific travel writer and accomplished photographer. This “nomad queen” traveled to the remote valley of Alamut in northern Iran where a notorious sect of Shiite assassins (mythologized by Marco Polo in the late 13th century) dwelled. Her intrepid expeditions took her to the Hadhramaut, a forbidding gateway to the frankincense route in southern Arabia where few Westerners had ventured. And in her mid-seventies, this intrepid explorer made it to an isolated and nearly inaccessible region of Afghanistan to photograph the 800-year-old Minaret of Jam.

If you live in a different time zone, please adjust your schedule accordingly. This live online experience uses Zoom Webinar, an easy-to-use web video service that includes closed captioning. All you need is an Internet connection and your computer. You will receive a confirmation email when you enroll, and a reminder email one week and one day before, as well as the morning of the event with a link and instructions on how to tune in. You will not be pictured on screen during the lecture, but you will have the opportunity to ask the instructor live questions using the Q&A box. Unless otherwise noted, all those who enroll in this program receive access to the live event as well as a recording of the lecture that you can watch any time within the two weeks following the live event.
