At a Glance

Bonsai are most closely associated with Japan but are found and treasured around the world. This lecture is part one of a two-part series presented by Michael James, the National Arboretum’s bonsai curator, and Ann McClellan, author of Bonsai and Penjing, Ambassadors of Peace and Beauty. Join us for an engaging and informative presentation about the remarkable collection of miniature trees at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum. In part one, Michael and Ann will explore how this living art form came to be, reflecting the Asian aesthetics of its origins, and how it expanded to other cultures. You’ll hear stories about how the trees were created and came to Washington D.C. and learn a few tips on care for these living works of art. Join us for part two to learn even more about these tiny trees and experience a live hands-on showing of an azalea bonsai from the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum.
